Chapter 40: Payment

Didi surges to her feet, scowl pulling all of her facial muscles into spasm it's so tight. "Hang on a titch," she says, interrupting the end of their little production. "There's a matter to be settled."

Gammitt turns, casual like, and looks down his long nose at her, pale eyes cold and calculating. "That being?"

"My payment." Didi feels small in the tall man's shadow, though she knows she has GS and Bo behind her, Pip perched on the cyborg's shoulder. She's hardly alone. But the looming oldster stands over her and from what she's just witnessed is a master of intimidation and argument over nothing.

"For what?" His voice is softer now, like she's not worth his effort. And his gaze tells her he's done with the show, ready to go home and ponder just how his daughter managed to screw him out of what he was after all along.
