Chapter 86: Mom

Didi's heart leaps and crashes about a million times in two thudding beats in the breath it takes for Petal to smile at her. She sees exactly why her grandfather treats her like Petal, how very much alike they are on the outside, hoping the inside is a match, too. Except, to Didi's discouragement, she's none of her mother's height, the tall, thin woman easily four or five inches above her only daughter, limbs leaner, body more angular than soft like Didi's. A physical form that's been through more years of strain and trouble. At least Didi's well come by her own penchant for making messes from the jaunty look of cocky acceptance on Petal's grinning face.
