Chapter 45: News From London

I immediately recognized the familiar smell of the Thames. Déjà vu struck. Hadn't we done this dance already? Only then did I realize the river was on the wrong side of me.

The tunnel had taken us completely under the waterway. I looked across at London, wondering if Samuel was aware we'd escaped him yet. Best not to wait around and find out.

I turned to ask my friends what our next step would be only to find them arguing quietly amongst themselves in harsh whispers. I was practically on top of them before I made out what was being said.

"-finally reached them," Josephine was saying. "I have my orders."

Vasek scowled at her. "Convenient of the Steam Union to suddenly reach out to you after you've freed the boy from the city."

Stella grunted her agreement.

"I was informed they've been trying to contact us," Josephine said, "but somehow the Brotherhood was able to block our communication." Even she seemed a little skeptical at that, but I could tell she wanted to believe.
