Chapter 60: Life In The Balance

Hearing those words from him triggered my anger like nothing else. Both magics surged inside me as my temper snapped.

"Your own niece!" I found myself on my feet, my entire body on fire as the living metal reacted to my fury. "You have no soul, Samuel Brindle. No soul at all."

He laughed at me, an extravagant sound. The humor of it lit his frigid eyes, his deep chuckle muting the sound of Kate's muffled sobs. "Why thank you," he said. "Wonderful of someone to finally notice."

There was nothing I could do. Nothing. Acting meant risking not only Kate's life, but speeding and perhaps completing the change within before I had time to figure out a plan. I sank back into my seat, teeth grinding against the effort to regain my temper, gaze locked on my young friend and her heaving shoulders.

"Tell me this, dear Auburdeen," Samuel said. "What is one girl when compared to the fate of all sorcerers?"
