Daniel sat in his tent and shook. She was after him. Somehow she was connected with the Bishop and she knew he was here. He felt her pull on him, even from this tent.
Joseph came into the tent and tied up the flaps.
"It's stuffy in here," he said. "Everybody's talking about the Choosers. That's kids' talk."
"Kids' talk?" Daniel said. "Tell me about it."
Joseph looked confused for a moment, "What was I saying?" he said, "I have to go read my Book." He ran out of the tent.
Daniel followed him out, but Joseph had vanished in the crowds. The people gathered in clumps. Wild speculation bounded from one group to another. The only people who weren't affected were the children. They still played and ran through the market.
Daniel walked out into the market and looked for the girl who'd led him to the chickens. She was playing tag with some other children. Daniel sat down and watched them.
"May I play?" he asked as the little girl ran past.
"Don't you have a Book?" she said.
