Chapter 39

"It makes sense," Daniel said, "If it really is a testing of humanity it would have to be by someone who had never read the Book."

Paul leaned against the wall of the shed and thought.

"I think you're right," he said, "but I don't understand why. What is the purpose of making a child choose whether to eat or not eat from God's Tree."

"What if this is all about the Tree and the Garden?" Daniel said. "The serpentines got us out of the Garden by promising us the Book and a way to be sure that we didn't make God angry. It might not be the serpentines who bring the children to the Garden."

"So why are we here?" Paul said. "We could have asked a child and we'd be further ahead."

"I don't think so," Daniel said. "The old man said that it was once in a generation. I haven't heard about any games that talk about the Garden."

"Adam in the Garden,

so very sad is he,

can't pick the apple

from God's Tree.

Eve in the evening

weeping in the night,

afraid she'll get God angry
