Chapter 40

"You used to dance," Paul said.

"Fool," she said and Paul's vision returned to normal. He was looking at a petulant young woman. "We made those tools. They can't be used against us."

"Yet still, you used to dance."

"What good is dancing?" Seerpharel said. "It isn't my music. You understand, don't you?"

"Yes," Paul said, "I understand. It is hard to let go of my will to move to someone else's song."

"So you will join us," Seerpharel smiled. It was the same smile that he'd glimpsed through a door when she pulled Daniel into the room.

"Like I said, it is hard to let go of my will to move to someone else's music." Paul shook his head. "I don't think I could give myself to you anymore than you could give yourself to me."

"Then we will destroy you."

"I'm not sure you can," Paul said, "though you are welcome to try."
