As Daniel fled into the dark horrible screams came from behind him. Great wrenching sobs forced their way out of him. After coming all this way to free themselves from the Book, Daniel had never imagined that the freedom they sought could become a choice for evil.
Blue flashes lit up the sky over Rym as Daniel ran toward the gate. The streets were empty of people. He might as well have been alone in the entire world. Daniel didn't know how long he ran before he collapsed. When he woke in the morning, there was a grey fog over everything. Stumbling his way through the city, he heard children laughing, but he didn't feel like playing.
Daniel found his way to the gate and slipped out with a group of people who were guiding a huge wagon full of lumber.
"Heading to Cepha," the driver said. "Book said they need lumber."
"I live near Cepha," Daniel said. "I could use a ride."
"Hop on. I could use the company."
