"Do you also realise that if the crown hadn't obtained sovereignty over this land when it did, the New Zealand Company would have divided this island and forced Māori to live in the extreme northern areas, on land the Company didn't want? Can you imagine what we'd be facing today?"
Spain remained silent and looked on with interest.
"William, if the New Zealand Company had had its way, we'd be fighting a war with Māori and not resolving these issues through a fair and legal process. I feel the New Zealand Company philosophy towards the indigenous peoples of this land has been harmful and dangerous. Left to their own devices, with Colonel Wakefield enthusiastically following Company directives, then Māori would have been exiled to the far north and left to suffer in squalor as unwanted tenants on land that is rightfully theirs."
Spain listened attentively.
"But let me offer you another perspective." Hobson turned to face Spain directly.
