"What are you doing in here? Out, get out!" He yelled with authority and some bluster.

Blocking access to the door, both Māori slowly approached. To free his hands, and in fear of fire, Dickie placed the lantern securely on a barrel and cautiously began to ease back and seek safety behind the barrels while he warned the intruders away.

"I have men coming here any minute now, so leave now while you still can!" he cautioned.

The two men remained quiet, steadily coming towards the frightened publican. Realising he was in imminent danger, Dickie quickly scrambled to put as many barrels as he could between himself and the intruders.

"Help! Someone help!"
