Barrett's men found him unconscious and lying in a pool of urine, blood and vomit. His eyes swelled almost shut and blood smeared his face where his teeth had bitten through his lips. Dickie's unknown assailants had come and gone and no one had seen or heard a thing.
Chief Te Wharepouri decided that Barrett's antics had gone on long enough and intended to visit Dickie himself - it was time to even the score. It was only fitting that he personally administer the punishment and take the life of Barrett, but recently he'd not been feeling well and was a little unsteady. But there was another reason why Barrett wasn't killed. An unexpected visitor had politely appealed to him to temporarily spare his life. After some discussion, the chief agreed, he would honour the unusual request.
