Money was spent wisely to improve the hotel since Charles Suisted became the proprietor. Paint, comfortable chairs and a welcoming, friendly atmosphere had done wonders for the place. Mrs. Suisted and the children arrived from Van Diemen's Land and she immediately went to work, cleaning, scrubbing and adding curtains. Her contribution added warmth that the ladies of Wellington gratefully appreciated.

Gone were men of dubious character who always loitered in the shadows, or stood at the door observing patrons suspiciously. The sound of Charles' booming laughter now resonated throughout the establishment, as did his vivacious personality.
