Vaslavis Clan: The Past (10)

The children huddled under a blanket in one corner of the cave. 

Their knees were scraping against the sand and the space they were allowed to occupy was small. For beast children like them, it was more than uncomfortable. The blanket was also making breathing difficult for them. 

Zarya, who Neverio had been expecting to cry out of the blue, remained silent the entire time much to the boy's relief. Being the oldest, he took responsibility for the other children. He patted each of their heads and occasionally reassured them that no harm would befall them. 

"Are any of you hungry?" Neverio whispered, "I have some extra bread here."

None of the children reacted to his words. The boy just sighed and smiled. He didn't want to add to the forlorn mood within their circle. 

For a few hours, there was no noteworthy incident that arose. Lorco, who had been whimpering because of his tired legs, looked at Neverio and spoke.
