Upon recognizing the voice, the most biting of shivers ran down the old man's spine. He didn't dare look back. He didn't dare make a single move. 

No, it's simply that he couldn't move. 

He could hear the footsteps closing in on him, but he couldn't gather the courage to run away. 

"I was skeptical about what Lakrev was saying. However, I decided to check for myself since they told me to get some rest. To my utter surprise, you really came. Is Lakrev a prophet or what?" 

Erwin could identify the sarcasm beneath Hanom's poor attempt. But that wasn't enough to quell the terror he was feeling. He tightened his hold on Zarya, afraid that the man might snatch away the little girl.

"Or is it because you're too predictable, Erwin Pelt?" Hanom said as he chuckled, "No wonder both Lakrev and Karmos don't trust you. The thing is, I don't consider you a threat at all. That's the only reason why I let you go around and act as you wish."
