Among beasts, prowess was the main basis of respect and honor. 

The stronger one was, the more respect they could get from their allies and enemies alike. Honor would come along with victory in battles. 

That's the reason why most Clan Heads were those who had shown great prowess throughout their entire journey. They became elders once their time as heads came to an end. 

Still and all, the older the elder was the more wisdom they could give to the younger ones. 

With all that being said, those who were able to hold the title of the Head of a Clan would receive endless respect even in their deaths. Because of that, those whose pride centered in their strengths desired to be Heads. 

It was the same for Erhom. He was confident that he was stronger and more qualified than Zekhyr who had clearly aged.
