Raising the teacup to his lips, Uncle Chen sipped the jasmine tea slowly, savoring the taste. Oh how much he loved jasmine tea! He would never grow tired of it.
Anai'ya smiled at her uncle's reaction. No matter how many times he drank jasmine tea he always showed that expression of utter satisfaction every single time. He was obsessed with tea, jasmine being his favorite. He had made her learn how to make tea the traditional Chinese way as means to connect her to her Chinese roots.
"How have you been Ani?" He asked taking a sip of tea, his eyes looked at her with concern.
Her heart constricted for a moment at his question. She knew he wasn't asking out of politeness, he truly cared about her wellbeing. It felt nice knowing there was someone who cared this much.
"You know the answer to that Uncle." Her eyes looked down at her teacup not daring to meet his gaze.
He sighed knowing what she was referring too.
"You have to learn to live a little Ani. Revenge isn't everything, don't let it consume your entire life." He advised.
"Mmm." She hummed in agreement. She wouldn't voice it out but he was right. She shouldn't let it consume her, but it was already way too late for that warning.
Sighing again, he placed the cup down on the tray in front of him reaching for a teacake.
"How's Lucian doing? I haven't heard from him in a while. Is he still with Lucy?"
Nodding her head and placed her cup down and leaned back in her leather chair.
"He's fine but he mentioned wanting to come home soon." She said warily looking up at the ceiling.
"What's so good about coming back here? He should stay right where he is." Uncle Chen said shaking his head.
"You tell him that." She replied.
"We both know he only listens to you Ani. He's safe where he is, why would he want to come back here to this hell hole?" He said shaking his head at his nephew's stubbornness. That boy was so hard headed, but the only one who could change his mind was Anai'ya.
"He misses us. Regardless of everything that happened here it's still home." She said with grief in her eyes.
Home use to be a happy place for them, but now it represented all the heartache and pain it brought into their lives. The suffocation, sorrow and pain that came with being home perhaps wasn't worth it but it's all they knew.
"Uncle, why don't you ever leave the base?" She asked suddenly.
Uncle Chen froze for a moment before picking up his teacup and taking a sip. For a moment it was completely silent before he cleared his throat.
"What is there to see outside?" He joked. His aged face softened up as he smiled.
"A cute Auntie that can help cook food for you for the rest of your life." She teased him being a bachelor. He had never married and had only dated a few women throughout the years.
He knitted his eyebrows at the thought of a woman invading his space and he grimaced.
"Leave Uncle's love life alone. How's the wedding planning going?" He teased back.
Ok, Uncle you win!, she thought.
