When I woke up, Mykel had me in his arms. I wasn't sure how he had gotten up so quickly, but I was glad that he had caught me. He was looking at my watch with a serious expression. It caused me to worry.
"What's wrong?" I mumbled, looking up at him.
"You heart is beating faster than normal." He told me. I took a deep breath, relaxing now that I knew it wasn't something too serious.
"That's normal with pregnancy." I informed him. "The extra blood being pumped causes a faster, stronger heart beat." I glanced over to the table to see that Luna and Kaelyn were peering over the table. We were outside so there weren't people surrounding us. Kaelyn looked like she had seen a romantic scene in a movie and was completely in love with it. She blinked suddenly and I could see the gears working in her head.
"Wait. So, you have narcolepsy and cataplexy AND you're pregnant?" She leaned on her elbows. I sat up, placing a hand on Mykel's leg for support.
"Yes. There is a lot going on right now." I blushed. Mykel shifted slightly before gracefully picking me up. He made it seem so easy.
"That's the dream! I want to have kids and know that I can take care of my soulmate and they can take care of me." Kaelyn swooned. Luna looked at her as if she were crazy.
"But you're... you're into girls. How will you have children?" She seemed like she had smelled something rotten. Kaelyn thought for a moment as Mykel placed me in my wheelchair.
"Oh, right. I guess that's out of the question." Kaelyn sounded glum. The sadness that washed over her face caused her to look down at the table and avoid eye contact. Luna seemed to feel bad for destroying her dream.
"Well, don't give up on wanting little ones. There are banks where you can get... you know. You can get it inserted inside you and it'll be without a male partner. You get to choose which one you want, too. It might not be yours and your Soulmate's, but it will be yours." I told them.
"How do you know about this?" Luna questioned. I could see that Mykel had the same question.
"My parents thought that I would never find my significant other and told me about it. They always wanted me to have a child, just farther in the future." I rubbed the back of my neck. "I still have to use the bathroom." Luna stood up and came to my side.
"I've got her, Muscle Man." She told Mykel. "Stay here and be...social." She began to push me towards the bathrooms. When we were a few feet away, Luna exhaled deeply.
"What's eating at you?" I gazed up at her.
"How do I know that she is the one?"
"How did you know Lily was the one?" I looked ahead as we approached the school's main building.
"I didn't. I just loved her. I felt butterflies when I met her and I was always afraid to speak." She sighed.
"That's exactly what you do now. You blush when she looks at you and you rub your neck like you were caught stealing candy and you're trying to say you didn't." I laughed softly. "You are definitely quieter and I can see that you stare at her with loving eyes."
"Maybe I'm wondering how to break her of that accent." She joked. "Sometimes I can't understand what she says and I have to think about it before answering."
"Girl, you know that accent is sexy." I shook my head as we got into the girl's bathroom. I stood and limped into a stall. "And those eyes. She is very attractive."
"For a totally straight woman, you seem to be falling for my girl." She replied from outside the stall. When I finished, I went to the sink.
"No, no. Not falling. I can just be honest and still go for guys." I smiled as I washed my hands. After drying them, I rubbed my belly before sitting back in my chair. Luna started to push me out so that we could go back to Mykel and Kaelyn. "Just put yourself into you both. Don't be afraid."
"Yeah." She seemed distracted now.
"What's wrong?"
"What if she was like... your lost sister?" She blurted.
"What?" I grabbed the wheels on the chair so that we stopped. "Why would you think that?"
"Your mom told me a story one time. About how you had a sister, but she didn't survive. Like... a twin. You were born in Scotland, right?" She moved so that she was in front of me. My brain became jumbled with thoughts. I hadn't thought about where I was born in years or that I had been told the same story. My mother had told me that when my supposed sister died, I started to get sick. "What if your sister was just given away? You were adopted. Maybe your sister was given to a different family." I looked to Kaelyn and started to feel like I couldn't breathe.
"Jasper?" Luna's voice seemed distant. As if she were several feet away. "Jas, you aren't looking so good. Talk to me." I could hear my breathing become quick and shallow. My heart pounded in my ears. I couldn't figure out why this affected me so much. I felt a hand on my thigh as one touched my face. While I could see Mykel in front of me, it didn't seem to register in my mind that he was there. He was talking, but I couldn't hear what he was saying. Slowly, I stood. My body was numb so my leg didn't hurt.
"Did he know the truth? Did mom and dad know the truth? Am I the only one that has been kept in the dark?" I thought. I pushed Mykel away and before I knew it, I was running. I wasn't sure where I was headed, so I just ran. My body went where it wanted to. I wove between students and avoided teachers until I found my destination. A closet in the band room. I curled up on the floor, trying to breathe. It was dark inside, but it didn't bother me. No one bothered me for the longest time and I couldn't figure out how I got away from Mykel. I wondered if he just let me go. I felt so alone in the closet, but that's how I wanted it to be. I didn't want to be around anyone.
