After following her cousin around and finding that she was not going to say anything, Sarah Wu was starting to get a little bit impatient. As someone who loved gossiping, how could she stand not knowing anything about Violet's plan?
In the end, Sarah could only suck in some breath and braved herself to ask, "Do you think this plan to pretend dating is going to work?"
"I hope so," Violet replied nonchalantly. She took some raspberries and pureed them in a food processor. She switched off the processor and looked at Sarah. "As long as our parents know nothing about it, I think it's going to work. Just promise me you're not going to tell anyone about this."
Sarah made a motion to zip her lips. "My lips are sealed. You know you can trust me. I'm your sister!"
Violet moved to another counter and threw in some butter and sugar in the mixer. Then, she took the raspberry puree and beat it at medium speed. "I'm just happy that we wouldn't be seeing each other so much. However, we still have to keep in touch just in case our parents would start to suspect anything."
Once she finished her words, Violet walked over to the refrigerator and stopped halfway when she walked past the sink. Her eyes widened as she stared at the piling of pots, bowls, and other kitchen utensils. The floor around the sink area was wet with water. Suddenly, Violet could feel her anger boiling.
"Guys!" She shouted. Her hands were on her waist. "What did I tell you about the rules? CAYG! Clean as you go."
A young girl rushed forward to the sink and bowed her head. "I'm sorry," the staff called Mai said. "I'll clean this up as soon as possible."
"I'll come back after five minutes," Violet warned as she turned around. "If I saw any dirty bowls in the sink, I'm going to cut your pay. And I mean all of..."
Violet did not manage to finish off her sentence when she slipped on the wet floor and fell.
Suddenly, everything was moving in slow motion.
By the time Violet was able to register what was going on, she had already landed flat on her back. Both her hip and head hit the floor with a loud sound.
Sarah who was right at the side saw how her cousin had slid and fell on the floor. For a few seconds, she did not know how to react.
"Violet!" Sarah screamed in horror. Swiftly, she went to Violet's side but was afraid to touch her cousin. "Oh my god, Violet!"
"Oww!" Violet groaned in pain.
"Are you alright?" Evan appeared in the area and was surprised upon seeing how his friend was lying on the floor. His expression grew anxious as he crouched beside Violet and tried to help her up.
"Do you think we should call the doctor?" Sarah asked as the rest of the staff began to swarm around Violet. Facing such a dangerous situation, Sarah suddenly panicked and did not know what she should do.
Fortunately, Evan was around. He turned to the other staff and spoke calmly, "Risa, Tara. You two take care of the customers. Make sure they are not alarmed. Brian, grab me a clean towel and some ice. Mai, mop the floor first lest someone else is going to slip and fall. The rest of you, back to work! There's nothing to see here." Evan barked. He checked on Violet's head and heaved with relief when Violet stood up voluntarily. He then helped Violet up and walked her to a chair.
"Are you okay?" Sarah asked anxiously.
Violet looked at the others and tried to smile. "I'm alright. Stop worrying so much. You guys should return to work. Besides the stinging pain in my head and my ass, I'm feeling quite good," Violet assured them.
Evan took a towel of ice from Brian and handed it to Violet. "Here. Put some ice on your head."
"Thanks," Violet pressed the towel to her head and winced in pain.
There was a long silence in the kitchen as everyone was focusing on Violet to see whether she was alright. Suddenly, Violet burst into a laugh, causing her staff to exchange a concerned look with each other.
"Did you guys see the way I fell?" Violet asked. "Did you see how I slipped backward? It was as if I was a cartoon character or something. It was hilarious!"
Sarah stared at Violet speechlessly before she turned to Evan. "She's definitely hit her head really bad. We should take her to the hospital."
Violet dismissed them with her hand. "No hospital. No doctor. I'm alright." She stood up to prove her words. "See? I can stand up without any problem."
"Uh, Violet," Tara called out. "Someone wants to see you!"
"Who is it?" Violet turned around and froze when she saw her fake boyfriend stood beside Tara. Instantly, the laughter on her face disappeared, and Violet was looking at the man with hostility. "What are you doing here?"
"You didn't pick up your phone," Ryan complained.
After he had tried to call her number and she did not answer, Ryan had to find out her bakery's address through his mother. He walked in into the cupcake bakery and was immediately greeted by the sweet smell that often accompanied Violet when he met her. When he talked to the staff and told her his identity, he was then led to the kitchen where he saw Violet was laughing happily. But as soon as she saw him, her face quickly changed.
"I left it in my locker." Violet grimaced in pain as she stood up. She put away the towel from her head and saw how the white towel turned red from her blood. "Okay, my head is bleeding." She turned to Evan and blinked. "Is that bad?"
Once Ryan saw the red spot on the towel, he instinctively sprinted towards Violet. He yanked her hand that was holding the towel and was surprised to see the amount of blood. He quickly analyzed what was happening and turned to look at the back of her head. "What happened?"
"Oww!" Violet yelped when the man grabbed her head and pushed it down. "You asshole. You're hurting me!"
"She slipped and fell hard on the floor," Evan informed.
"Is she going to be okay?" Sarah's face turned pale at the sight of the blood.
"Of course I'm okay," Violet replied before anyone could say anything. "Get me a band-aid or a towel or something to stop the bleeding. If you help me to press at the wound for some time, the bleeding will stop."
"We need to get her to the hospital," Ryan said. He held her by the arms but she jerked away from him.
"I told you that I don't need to go to the hospital. I mean, who's going to cover Mrs. Brown's order? We've got a lot more cupcakes to bake," Violet spoke angrily. Then, she turned to Ryan. "Who are you to tell me to go to the hospital or not? I can take care of myself. It's not like you're a doctor or something."
"Cupcake, I am a doctor!" Ryan snapped. "This is not the time for you to think about your job. Your health is more important. Your health is what got you into your job and it will carry you through life. If you don't treat the wound now, it could get worse. What if you got a concussion?"
"He's right. What if you got a concussion?" Sarah cut in. "You really need to go to the hospital."
"Don't worry about the order. I'll take care of everything." Evan assured her. "You know I'm really quick with my hand."
"I'll help." Sarah volunteered.
Violet stared at her friends. Her expression grew soft as she watched the concern on their face. "Fine, fine. I'll go to the hospital," she said as she stood up.
Ryan tried to hold Violet, but she managed to avoid him again. "I'll take you to the hospital."
"I said I'll go to the hospital. But I don't need your help," Violet said. "I can walk by myself."
Ryan took a deep breath and watched his stubborn, pretend-girlfriend walked wobbly to the exit. Looking at her, Ryan suddenly had a headache. He was only trying to help but was rejected. It seemed that Violet was still angry at what he had said previously and she had no intention to forgive him.
