Chapter 538: Devastated

Mina swallowed hard as President Lee gently lifted her leg and began to unwrap the bandage. Unlike his, there were several layers of gauze on her thigh, and he moved slowly to prevent using too much pressure. When the wound was finally revealed, Mina felt tears threaten to spill. The entire area surrounding the stitched injury was a deep shade of purple and spread out in bright pinks and dark reds all the way down to the knee.

President Lee was inspecting the wound as if he were a doctor, and truthfully, it was only because they were in a hospital setting that Mina did not feel uncomfortable under the man's gaze. She had been shot in her upper thigh, extremely close to where the femoral artery was found. Maybe it was because she was squatting down when she was shot, but somehow the bullet missed the artery, but damaged the muscle, which was why she could not move her leg without severe pain.

"I have scheduled your stitches to be reopened."

"Why?" Mina whispered.

"Because Jeremy can do a better job with his eyes closed." Mina watched the man gently rest her leg before lifting his shirt. "He took care of this for me." Mina stared at President Lee's exposed skin, only noticing the light scar when he brushed his hand over it. "I will have him redo mine as well." Mina nodded. She did not mind having a scar, but she did not want it to be grotesque.

"When will I be transferred?" President Lee was already rewrapping her leg, albeit not as neatly or tightly as the nurses.

"In ten minutes."

Drax caught up to Mills and pulled her into his body with so much force that he heard the air leave her lungs. She turned to strike him, but she was slower than usual. He studied her face, noticing that she looked sick. She was lightly sweating while rubbing at her abdomen.

"What is wrong with you?" Mills glared at him as if he had no right to ask. Understanding that she was still angry, Drax resisted the urge to pry.

"Can we please talk? There have been a lot of misunderstandings between us, and I don't want to end up like Mina and Ian." Mills nodded and sat in a nearby chair. Drax fished out his phone and gave it to her. "I never cheated on you." Mills reviewed the footage and handed it back to the man unaffected.

"Mina told me." Drax was panicked. He thought all he had to do was show Mills the video and she would jump back into his lap, but she did not. "Drax. I am happy with Melony. She doesn't expect anything from me except a smile, something I almost lost when I was with you." Mills had begun to rub circles on her belly, and Drax could not help but to become more concerned.

"Did you eat something bad?" The woman shook her head.

"No, it's just menstrual cramps." Mills doubled over in pain, and Drax felt it was more than 'cramps.' He knew exactly how Mills was around that time, and while she was usually uncomfortable, it had never made him worry. He lifted her, horrified by the blood in the chair. He rushed Mills to a nurse and demanded help, the woman was at first frightened, but she quickly got Mills into a room.

Shortly after, Mills was moved to the maternity ward, and Drax felt his entire world jolt with realization. He was shaking in anger, but he did not leave Mills' side. A woman entered the room, looking at Mills' bloodwork results with a frown. She pulled a machine toward Mills, who finally realized what was happening.

"I'M PREGNANT?!" She shouted, and the woman looked to Drax, who had already guessed what was going on.

"Mills babe, I think you 'were' pregnant." Mills tilted her head to the side, studying Drax's face before she burst into tears. The woman who had come to examine her, excused herself, and only returned after she was called back. She put cold gel onto Mills' abdomen, and used the machine to scan the woman's uterus, and as she expected, found nothing.

Mills did not want children yet but knowing that she was carrying a small life inside of her and had lost it felt like her soul had been ripped into tiny pieces. She gripped Drax's hands, not ready to forgive him, but not ready to be alone. Drax started to blame Ellie, but Mills told him that she had been feeling similar pain before she came back, which was why she pegged them as cramps.

"This is my fault," the man sobbed, making Mills actually look at him. He looked terrible. He had not shaved, he needed a haircut, and he had deep dark circles under his eyes.

"It was for the best," Mills whispered. "I wouldn't have been able to raise a child alone, and I know Melony isn't ready to settle down just yet." Drax stared at Mills, his tears falling freely as she spoke.

"Don't do this to me." He produced her engagement ring and tried to slide it back onto her hand, but Mills clenched her fist. "Please?" Mills shook her head and Drax threw the ring against the wall before leaving her alone. Devastated, Mills stood up and searched the floor until she found it, surprised that none of the stones had been knocked out. She steeled herself for what was still to come.

----

Mina had never ridden in a helicopter before, and never wanted to ride in one again. Her stomach rolled and flipped in ways that almost made her vomit. Had she not been so focused on how depressed Drax looked she would have long ago spilled the water in her stomach, but she held it in. Mina rested her hand on Drax's, and he looked up at her, flashing a bitter smile that made her lip quiver. His eyes were rimmed in red, and although he was not now, Mina knew he had been crying.

When the helicopter landed, Doctor Witt was already waiting for Mina, and she was taken straight into surgery. She was not afraid, because if President Lee wanted to hurt her, he had plenty of opportunities to do it. She had spoken to him, and had confessed that when she pushed him, it was with the intention of killing him, and he responded by telling her that he already knew. She was at first worried, but the man held out his hand, telling her to consider them even.

When Mina, awoke, her head was pounding. She was starving, because she had not had anything to eat since before she had gotten shot. She was surprised to see Drax by her side, looking no better than he had when she last saw him.

"You know she loves you, right?" Drax's gaze shot to Mina's. He smirked, then focused back on the ground. "What happened?" Knowing that Mills was likely to tell Mina anyway, Drax told her everything. "And you left her?" Mina asked, half shouting. "Go find her you idiot. Make sure she is okay." Drax did not know why, but he felt as though he should listen to Mina; he kissed her forehead for the motivation before he fled the room, bumping into Doctor Witt as he did.

"I heard shouting. It appears my genius is awake. How do you feel?" Mina narrowed her eyes at the man feeling as though if she responded he would continue to call her 'my genius.' She chose to ignore the man until he used her name. "Mina, how do you feel?"

"Hungry," she admitted.

"That's good, and your leg?"

"It's throbbing, but I don't feel much pain, it's more like a dull ache."

"The bullet went in and out clean, so I don't think there will be nerve damage." Dr. Witt entered the room and gestured for Mina to lift her blankets. "Relax, I am a professional."
