Don't Fear (Script)

EXT. CRANE HOME.

JAYSON and MIKE walk up to LIZBETH'S home as JAYSON looks about seemingly nervous.

MIKE

Will you calm the hell down.

JAYSON

Dude...I...what just happened there?

MIKE

I don't know...but let's find out.

JAYSON

Shouldn't we just get back to your place?

MIKE

We're fine, dude. Trust me.

JAYSON

Why'd you even take me there?!

MIKE

You tagged along.

JAYSON

Goddamnit dude.

MIKE and JAYSON lay their bikes down and head up to LIZBETH'S FRONT PORCH, MIKE pushing the doorbell as they wait a few moments before LIZBETH CRANE, A beautiful dirty blonde haired young woman of 18 years of age opens the door.

LIZBETH

MIKE...?

MIKE

Hey, LIZ.

JAYSON

Sup.

LIZBETH

What can I do ya for? JAYSON, staying out of trouble?

JAYSON

Trying to...honestly am this time...

LIZBETH

You guy's look spooked? Something happened?

MIKE

That's why we're here...I was wondering if I can speak to your grandma?

LIZBETH

Of course...you know she charges right?

MIKE

Yeah, we got cash.

LIZBETH

Sorry, just have to be sure to tell people that.

MIKE

It's alright.

LIZBETH

Come in.

LIZBETH steps aside and the TWO head in as LIZBETH looks about before  closing the door.

INT. CRANE HOME

MIKE and JAYSON are led into the dimly lit DINING ROOM AREA as LIZBETH has them take a seat, as she goes into another room.

MIKE and JAYSON look about anxiously before LIZBETH returns, wheeling in an OLDER WOMAN who wears a PAIR OF SHADES that cover only her EYEBALLS.

MIKE and JAYSON sit up as LIZBETH places her in front of them before she takes a seat beside her grandma.

LIZBETH

Grandma wishes to know what troubles you both?

MIKE

Oh...well...Could you tell her that while we were...

LIZBETH

She can hear you.

The TWO look at the stoic faced and silent expression-ed MRS. CRANE as MIKE nods.

MIKE

Right...umm, MRS. CRANE...we saw some things...

JAYSON

Yeah and they really freaked us out.

They tell her what they saw as flashes of the events occur as they were speaking.

LIZBETH looks at them horrified before she leans in towards her GRANDMA who seemingly say's nothing.

LIZBETH

MIKE...JAYSON...Grandma wants to teach you both something.

A BLACK BOX suddenly appears on the table, JAYSON scooting back in horror as MIKE looks stunned, but impressed.

MIKE

How'd you do that?

JAYSON

Yeah where the hell did that come from?

LIZBETH

MIKE...Put your hand in that box.

MIKE

Why?

LIZBETH

Just do it.

MIKE does as he shrugs and places his hand in but as he does the box jumps and pulls his hand and some of his arm inside, JAYSON jumping back as MIKE looks on in pure terror.

MIKE

Ow, what the fuck!

LIZBETH

Don't fear it, MIKE, JAYSON.

MIKE

Get this thing off of me!

LIZBETH

Don't fear.

MIKE

Ahh it's crushing my fucking hand!

JAYSON

Goddamnit get it off of him!

JAYSON reaches down and starts trying to help MIKE pry it off but nothing seems to work.

LIZBETH

Don't fear!

MIKE looks at JAYSON and settles him down by pushing him off, MIKE closing his eyes as he sets his hand down and waits for a few seconds before he easily retracts his hand from out the black box, MIKE checking his hand as there was no physical evidence of anything hurting or attacking him. JAYSON looks the hand over in disbelief.

JAYSON

There's no markings at all?

MIKE

No...

LIZBETH

GRANDMA wanted you both to know, that fear is the real killer. No matter what evil may or may not exist or be out there, know that you are your own worst enemy when it comes to facing it.

MIKE

That really hurt...

LIZBETH

It was all in your mind.

JAYSON

I felt that thing tugging his hand.

LIZBETH

It was all in your minds. Believe me.

MIKE

So that's it? That's all she has for us about what's going on?

LIZBETH

For now, I'm afraid she's giving you the best advice she can about how to protect yourselves. If anything else is to happen, come back and see us again...she will help you again if she can.

MIKE

Thanks...

JAYSON

I guess.

MIKE

Oh...I have one more question for her if that's okay?

LIZBETH

That's fine.

MIKE

It's about JODY...

LIZBETH

Grandma's been over this already, MIKE. He's not going to leave you, if he does, he'll take you with him.

MIKE

But he's...he's talking about it more...and it's starting to sound serious.

LIZBETH

GRANDMA is never wrong, MIKE. He won't leave you.

MIKE

I hope so.

LIZBETH.

It'll be 40 dollars.

MIKE and JAYSON each throw down a 20 which disappears with the BLACK BOX the second the money hits, MIKE shaking his head as JAYSON walks out, LIZBETH getting up as she whispers something to her GRANDMA before coming over.

JAYSON heads out as MIKE is right behind him but LIZBETH stops him.

LIZBETH

MIKE.

MIKE

Yeah, LIZ?

LIZBETH

Sorry I haven't called. I know I told you I would but...I've been..busy.

MIKE

It's fine, you don't have to make excuses, you're older and I'm younger and I get it.

LIZBETH

Haha, you're such a loser sometimes.

MIKE

Yeah..

LIZBETH kisses him on the cheek, MIKE looking at her confused as JAYSON raises an eyebrow before turning and smiling to himself.

MIKE

What was that for?

LIZBETH

Cuz I'm sorry I haven't called, but be patient okay? I promise I will.

MIKE

If you say so.

MIKE turns and heads off as he suddenly hears a voice.

LIZBETH

(O.S.)

BE CAREFUL, MIKE...THERE IS A EVIL HERE...AND IT'S GETTING STRONGER...

MIKE

You say something?

MIKE turns but the DOOR to the house is already shut.

MIKE raises an eyebrow before he catches up to JAYSON who was already holding up his DIRT BIKE ready to go.

LIZBETH comes and sits down by her GRANDMA who looks at her.

LIZBETH

He's marked them both...I felt his presence alone on MIKE the strongest.

The GRANDMA looks at LIZBETH who nods.

LIZBETH

I know, GRANDMA...I think he's starting to hear me...I just hope it's not been too late...

The GRANDMA continues to do nothing but stare forward.

EXT. PEARSON HOME

DUSK is beginning to settle as MIKE and JAYSON finish replacing their slashed wheels on their DIRT BIKES as JAYSON notices the CUDA is still gone.

JAYSON

Where's JODY?

MIKE

Probably at CARL'S.

JAYSON

CARL'S CANTINA? I thought they shut that place down.

MIKE

Nah, it's no longer a strip joint, just a bar now.

JAYSON

Hmph.

MIKE spins the wheel and hands the wrench over JAYSON who tightens his down.

JAYSON

What are we going to do? About what we saw, I mean we didn't see anything too...

MIKE

I'm going back.

JAYSON

What?

MIKE

Tonight. Round midnight.

JAYSON

Why?

MIKE

JODY will be home by then, be pretty drunk so he won't notice that I'll take one of the .45's.

JAYSON

Dude, seriously come on man, let's just leave it alone.

MIKE

Something is going on up there and I want to know what.

JAYSON

Count me out, I don't know what I saw, but that's as far into this as I need to be.

MIKE

Fine.

JAYSON

MIKE, please man, let this go.

MIKE

I can't.

JAYSON

Why?!

MIKE

I don't know...I just...feel that I have too.

JAYSON

You're so weird sometimes you know that.

JAYSON hands him back the wrench before he checks his tire.

JAYSON gets up and turns the BIKE back onto it's front and starts it up, JAYSON looking at MIKE as MIKE begins putting the tools away.

JAYSON

Are you really going up there tonight?

MIKE

Yup.

JAYSON

Let me know how it goes?

MIKE

Yep.

JAYSON

I'll see you later man.

MIKE nods as JAYSON backs out of the DRIVEWAY before he takes off down the street, MIKE backing up as he gets ready to head inside before he notices a PICK UP pull in just as he set everything back into the garage.

REGGIE gets out and comes over with a bag of food as MIKE smiles at him and going into the cooler he pulls out a MILLER LIGHT and hands it to REGGIE.

REGGIE

Thank you kind sir.

REGGIE hands MIKE the bag before taking a seat on the PORCH CHAIR he claims as his own as MIKE sits on the PORCH SWING with the food and a beer himself.

MIKE

JODY sent ya?

REGGIE

Nah, But I just came from there and figured you could use a bite.

MIKE

Thanks man, I hadn't even thought about eating today.

REGGIE

Been busy?

MIKE

You can say that.

REGGIE

Hey man, wanted to talk to you about something.

MIKE

Oh yeah, what's that?

REGGIE

You don't mind working do ya?

MIKE

Nope.

REGGIE

Okay good. I may be able to get you on at the COFFEE HUT, not sure yet, but if not I know a few guys who lend me their ICE CREAM TRUCK during the summer...

MIKE

Oh god not that again.

REGGIE

Last year you helped me out a lot and I could really use you again this year, but this time I'll pay ya.

MIKE

How much?

REGGIE

Half.

MIKE

Fine.

REGGIE

See, you are now half way there in being an adult.

MIKE

Halfway? What's the other half?

REGGIE

You gotta get laid first.

MIKE

Shut up.

REGGIE

Haha.

The TWO take a DRINK in silence, just enjoying the night of each others company.
