'Someone else is here!' Chauv jerked his head in the direction where that voice came from, only to see an apprentice wearing a black, worn out hooded robe with... Katty? She didn't die?
Chauv was thinking that it might be his imagination because of him thinking about that brat all day. But as he heard that squeaky voice again, he had no choice but to admit that it really was her.
"No, Look closely big brother. That's the brave apprentice I met earlier but... why is he not dead yet?" Katty answered Aren's question.
Chauv looked at the girl who was now pointing at him with a frown on her face, as if it wasn't right for him to be alive. Hearing what she said, a vein popped on his forehead.
'It is me who should be asking that... Due to what reason are you alive?' With this question in mind, Chauv was now frustrated. The mission of killing Katty was given by the family head. If he failed at this, then he would lose his position as an heir. There was not just him in the family who were qualified to be the heir.
Other than him and his cousin, there were other three as well who were in line for the position of the heir. It was only because of his outstanding deeds, his hard work and his absolute loyalty to the family, that he became a heir. If he were to show incompetence in this mission, then there was no doubt that others would pull him down and snatch his position.
No! He couldn't let that happen. He had to kill Katty, even if by his own hands. This brat should never be able to escape moonlight forest alive.
In about a minute, Chauv's thoughts had turned irrational. He failed to complete the mission and due to it, failed to make a good decision in this situation. He didn't consider what would become of him if the court mage ever found him after he killed Katty. Now, he was only focusing on one thing, to kill Katty and remain as the heir.
However, even if he thought of killing her. Katty was not alone now. There was someone else with her, that mysterious hooded apprentice who Katty called as ''big brother''.
'Is he an apprentice directly under the Court Mage, odered to protect Katty in this test? However, if she really had a bodyguard, then the family would've certainly told me about him?' As he didn't get any answer after thinking, Chauv proceeded to size up this apprentice.
The hooded boy didn't have any aura of elemental energies nor of a dark mage's aura. It meant that the apprentice was either a spritual, summoning or illusion magic apprentice. As for divination magic, that subject didn't have much of combat use, So Chauv didn't consider that the hooded figure would be a diviner.
After thinking up to this point, Chauv protected his spiritual space with his spiritual power to resist any spiritual or illusion attack that might come at him. He also stayed vigilant for any abrupt appearance of a summoned creature and use of magical items.
However, contrary to his expectations, the hooded apprentice didn't use any spells but instead... rushed at him!
Whoosh!
When he saw the gaze given by this suspicious apprentice when he saw Katty, Aren immediately knew that he was an enemy. So, when he saw that the apprentice was in thought for a brief moment, Aren didn't hesitate to strike first.
Still, Chauv wasn't the heir of a major family for nothing. As soon as he saw Aren rushing forward at him, he promptly cast ''haste'' on himself and while trying to increase the distance between them, activated his magical item. He knew that with Aren's abnormally fast speed, there was no way he could finish casting a spell in time.
The next second, an dark ring burst out from Chauv's robe, making him as the center.
Halo of Acedia!
As the dark halo enveloped him, Aren found out that his thoughts where slowing down and he was having a strong inclination to do nothing and just lay down on the ground. While forcefully resisting the effects of the spell, he found a silver of opportunity and also activated the spell ''Earth Armor'' of his earth bracelet.
When earth elements had made a sturdy armour on his body, Aren's speed had already slowed down.
On the other hand, Chauv was rapidly chanting a spell from his Grimoire. The reason he had cast haste on himself wasn't just to increase the distance but to also cast faster.
He also wasn't one bit worried that after he distanced himself from Aren, the halo wouldn't reach the target. No matter what he did, Aren was already on the area of effect of Halo. Even if Aren forced himself to stop as soon as he had activated the spell on his robe, the force of inertia brought about by his speed would still bring him on the area of effect.
Such was the result of his combat training under a battle mage of his family. Just by casting an auxiliary spell, he'd already put himself on advantage in this battle, making Aren a living target already in the beginning.
"Hex of pain!"
Just as he cast the spell, Aren saw that the surroundings had dimmed for while then suddenly,
"Ah!" an agonized voice came out of his mouth. His body started aching all over. It seemed that the spell had somehow bypassed his mage armour and directly caused infliction on him.
Seeing that he had got the desired result from the combo of spells, Chauv started to cast ''ray of darkness'' to finish off the enemy. However, an ''angry'' yet somewhat cute voice was heard in the battlefield.
"Don't hurt big brother, you bad person!"
"Water arrows!" Katty cast her spell showing an ''enraged'' expression.
'What a pain... so you wanna die first, huh? Fine then!' Chauv became annoyed after being interrupted. He quickly turned his Grimoire to fifth page and cast the last spell he had.
"Flesh from the Abyss, shield me... Shroud of flesh!"
As he cast the spell, a black circle appeared beneath him and threw out large pieces of flesh and meat, all smeared with blood and gore which quickly covered him from all directions.
The water arrows that came at him were all either repelled or ''eaten and digested'' by the flesh. However, they still managed to shred the fleshy barrier apart. Although Chauv managed to remain unscathed, the energy of his spell which maintained a small connection with Abyss was expended, due to which the flesh were sucked inside and that black circle also disappeared.
"Tsk, making me waste a precious defensive spell with a simple water arrow... you're dead!" Chauv bellowed, while something seemed to change within him.
At this moment, the spell restricting Aren seemed to have dissipated and even that hex was gone. As the pain subsided, Aren quickly stood up and went backwards, coming beside Katty.
"Be careful, I can feel that there is something wrong with him now." he cautioned her and took out the last two scrolls that he had.
