"There is nothing better to start off the day than a rich breakfast," Ji Yuan said while pointing to a plate of fluffy pancakes that he had just proudly served on Chang-Min's table. "Especially not an important day like this."
Chang-Min did not pay any attention at first, he was so caught up in scrolling through online articles to find rumors about which team might try to recruit him, but he only found people making wild assumptions about it on ReadThat, a platform that contains a large and influential Era of Eternals forum. There, Chang-Min got lost in reading heated conversations discussing his ability to hold his ground in today's Masterclass Era.
One user wrote: "The meta has evolved, modern EoE is much more punishing" or another one said "My mother asked me if I cleaned the dishes, I replied: 'Wicha'. She knew they are washed." However, those comments did not make Chang-Min second guess his decision to return to pro-play or discourage him, they rather motivated him to prove his doubters wrong.
When Chang-Min noticed the smell of pancakes and Ji Yuan's expectant face, he nodded affirming and said, "I am glad the food is not as burned as last time."
Ji Yuan was surprised Chang-Min could still remember it, since it has been several years ago that he cooked for him: "I keep forgetting your eidetic memory is not restricted to EoE. How does your brain have so much capacity? You have played 20,000 games of EoE and you can probably remember every detail about all of them."
"It is not just the case with me, in fact, many chess players also have this ability. They remember every position and every move they have ever made. It is nothing special" Chang-Min replied.
"Still, there is barely anyone in the current Chinese Masterclass Era who could do that, at least nobody I have ever played with. You are just wired differently."
"Wired differently?" Chang-Min was perplexed.
"In a good way! In a very good way, Minnie!" Ji Yuan added hysterically right after he realized what he just said.
"I hope so, otherwise my wiring will make me show you the door" Chang-Min intimidated Ji Yuan with a calm voice.
"Anyways, did you already receive any offers?" Ji Yuan tried to change the topic nervously. "I already got one this morning, apparently Team Gravity from North America wants a new tank player. But it does not matter, I am done for good." While Ji Yuan said that, a spark of mischievous joy ignited his eyes.
"It makes no sense," Chang-Min mumbled while chewing on one of his pancakes. "You want to retire, and you are getting offers while they seem to have completely forgotten about me. I wonder when you will come to your senses and go back to EoE. Your arms are still healthy, there is no reason to quit yet."
With a suddenly more serious voice, Ji Yuan said, "I just don't see a reason to compete anymore. And if you want it so desperately, why don't you just make a couple of calls?"
"I have tried to talk to Coach Lee" Chang-Min said while clenching his hand into a fist, "But this bridge is burnt. I don't think there is anyone else I could ask."
"Then think again," Ji Yuan grinned. "Maybe you could talk to my player agent. She is connected with managers of pro teams from all over the world, her network is incredible."
Chang-Min nodded, "We should give it a try. What do I have to lose."
"There is just one problem," Ji Yuan said quietly while timidly pressing his index fingers together. "After I have made my great escape from the gaming house, she is probably mad at me. And believe me, when she is mad, she scares the hell out of me. And if I ask her for a favor… Oh, I do not even want to imagine what she would do to me." Ji Yuan looked disturbed.
Chang-Min snapped his head in Ji Yuan's direction and looked him dead in the eye, "Why are you afraid of a girl? Can't you just reconcile with her."
"She would never pick up my calls, after what I have done. Professionality means everything to her. She is a true boss b*tch and I am on her blacklist," Ji Yuan told Chang-Min. "However, I know where her agency office is located. I could bring you there, but I can't get you in."
"Alright, let's go on a little trip together" Chang-Min exclaimed determinedly and got up from his gaming chair to quickly grab a charcoal-colored leather jacket from his wardrobe that reflected the light like a polished onyx as well as a pair of sunglasses. "We should get you out of that pajama first, just chose something from my closet."
Ji Yuan could not believe what he had just heard. "Whatever I want?"
Before Chang-Min could answer, he already saw Ji Yuan frantically digging in his clothes.
"Is this Cashmere? Oh my god, a Gucci coat! And Versace! WTF?" Ji Yuan was gasping for breath. "This has to be the best day of my life!"
Chang-Min tried to calm him down, "Hurry up, we have plans today."
After Ji Yuan selected clothes, he was smiling like a child on Christmas. "Ain't I one trendy boy? That's what I call a glow-up!" He was wearing a floral shirt with pastel colors and a matching white silk jacket together with white creased pants with a Gucci belt and crocodile leather shoes.
The two went downstairs into an underground garage, where Chang-Min pressed his car keys, and the lights of a black precision-engineered BMW started to flash. The car was a spacious SUV with a sophisticated interior design, conveying a feeling of dominance and power that suited its owner. Chang-Min started the car and Ji Yuan was giving him directions, after Ji Yuan had misdirected them a few times they still managed to arrive at their destination: a majestic high-rise tower in the downtown area with a mirror facade.
On top of the building, there was a sign saying "Mo Tian Consult".
Still in the car, Ji Yuan explained "Here we are, this is where my player agent works, her name is Huang Yulan. She is the director of the esports section of this consulting agency, they are managing many players from several teams in the Chinese Masterclass and Academy Era. She is an extreme control freak, that's why she manages unreliable players herself, at least that's why she became my agent."
The two got out of the car and walked towards the entry of the building, there was a doorman dressed in a black suit waiting for people to enter the pristine entrance hall that was decorated with holograms showcasing companies that Mo Tian Consult has worked for. One also showed the logo of the LZ Reapers, Ji Yuan's previous team. The building radiated an aura of drive and success, that made an impression on Chang-Min.
"I can't come inside with you," Ji Yuan said. "But once you tell them who you are, they will probably let you talk to her. But be careful, she has a fiery temperament. Just like you. Or even worse..."
While Ji Yuan said that, he did not pay attention to a small young lady behind him who just got off a taxi cab. She was wearing a gray elegant business suit and a black pantyhose. Her tight office skirt was drawing attention to her curvaceous hips that contrasted her otherwise slim figure. She was staring at Ji Yuan with the gaze of a ruthless businesswoman, that was fierce yet graceful.
After a few seconds, she started to walk up to the two men. When Ji Yuan noticed her, his complexion turned from honey-toned to pale white and his hands started to tremble.
"You got nerves to show up here again" she approached Ji Yuan furiously.
Ji Yuan stuttered in a shaky voice, "I am so sorry, Player Agent Huang Yulan."
