God, I'm Lonely

It's a homecoming, and it feels like everybody else is dancing with their couple, but not Joanne and Felix.

They both sit while getting sulky with punches on their hands.

"Urgh... Everybody is getting lovey-dovey, and here we are... alone..." Felix mumbles to himself.

Joanne looks at him, blankly and sighs. "Well, at least your crush is not dancing with someone else..." says Joanne.

Felix chuckles and says, "Ehehe, your crush, you said..."

Joanne's eyes widen as she realizes that she just admitted that she has a crush on Alfred.

"Urgh, at least you have a crush... I'm alone, and I have no one to blame, but me..." he says while rolling his eyes.

They take a deep breath and let it all out at the same time.

"F**k, I'm lonely..." Joanne says.

Felix chuckles again and says, "Somebody's been hanging around Val too much, tchehehe" while referring to the cussing.

Joanne rolls her eyes, and suddenly Alfred and his date are dancing almost near them.

"Oh, great, now I can see them very clearly," she complains.

Felix sighs and mumbles, "Why is the universe never on our side? Are you even up there?" while looking up desperately.

Felix stays silent for a second as he remembers something.

"Wait a minute, where's Beca?" he confusedly asks Joanne.

She just shrugs it off and answers, "Probably hooking up with someone."

"Meeh..." Felix agrees while lifting his shoulder.

Closer-The Chainsmokers is playing. Alfred and his date suddenly smile at each other. They get closer face to face. His hands are on her waist and she hugs him. She rests her head on Alfred's chest, and they dance to the song.

"Urgh, I guess this is their song," she sarcastically says.

They keep getting closer while looking into each other eyes. Alfred and his date are just inches away from locking their lips.

Joanne looks at Felix flatly and complains, "Seriously?"

"Don't look at me! I'm not the one kissing him!" he complains to her.

She rolls her eyes and leaves him while saying, "Urgh, I'm getting more punch."

"Wha- How many times have you refilled that?! You haven't even been to the bathroom once!" Felix mumbles to himself confusedly.

Felix is alone there. He's sitting while looking around him, all couples dancing to the song. Weirdly enough, Felix is not as anxious as he used to be. He's not sweating insanely, and his heart is not beating like it's going to explode anymore. The anxiety that often kicks in is not kicking in anymore.

At the moment, he feels fine. It's not perfect, but it's a significant improvement for him.

He looks around the bright and colorful room filled with young people having the time of their lives while Felix is still alone.

"God, I am lonely..." he realizes.

He suddenly spots a familiar person in the crowd.

It's Emily.

She's dancing with another guy, making new memories with him. There are a rush and tension between them. Felix can see clearly that they desire more. They keep looking into each other's eyes, and their lips are very close to each other.

Oddly, he doesn't feel jealous at all.

He feels okay. In fact, he kind of ships the two of them. It seems like Felix is not having a crush on Emily anyway.

He looks at Joanne, still near the punch, but she's with someone else there. Yes, she's magically talking to Alfred now, and there is no sign of his date there.

Felix just looks at them while smiling, knowing that his best friend is having fun.

"Maybe the universe is starting to listen to us, huh..." he mumbles to himself while smiling.

-Meanwhile Joanne-

She's standing near the punch with bummed expression.

She sighs, a familiar voice appears, and it takes her by surprise.

"Hey..." Alfred greets her while smiling sweetly.

Her eyes enlarge, and her heart is thumping wild.

Her face starts to flush, and she looks away.

She tries so hard to stay sane, but it's not easy.

She looks at him and says while smiling awkwardly, "Hey..."

"So... you havin' fun?" he asks her calmly.

She startles and awkwardly stutters, "Y-yeah! O-of course! Ahaha..."

The smile on his face is replaced with guilt now.

"So... Are you with Felix now...?" he cautiously asks her.

"What? Felix? No, we're just friends! He's my best friend..." she says while forcing a smile.

Then, the corner of Alfred's lips starts to form a light smile.

"Well, alright, then... I'll see you around..." he says while smiling sweetly and leaves her alone.

He walks away and smiles, friendly to some people in the crowd.

She sighs and complains, "I guess he's smiling like that to basically everyone..."

Is there any chance that Joanne means something to Alfred, or is he just being nice? In her heart, she wants to be somebody to him. Joanne doesn't want to be just a friend from the science club.

She wants more.

Will that be possible? It turns out that having a crush is a lot harder than she thought it would be.

"He got his hands all over her, then he talked sweetly to me, and then he went hugging her again..." she mumbles while looking down.

To Joanne, Alfred is like having no mercy for her. Her heart keeps sinking every time Alfred and his date touch.

She tries to grasp some air, and she glances up to the ceiling to hold the tears from falling down.

-Meanwhile Felix-

He's still sitting separate and probably wondering why it's taking so long for Joanne to just get some punch.

He looks across the crowd, and he sees Mike there, just dancing closely with a girl.

Surprisingly, he notices Felix, and their eyes meet. Felix quickly looks away, acting like nothing just happened.

Now, he's feeling lonely more than ever.

He's tired of hearing these love songs and seeing people around him falling in love. Not having a special someone is kind of irritating him.

Can someone cover his ears? Can someone pull him out of the crowd? Can someone take him home?

Deep down, he just wants to be somebody to someone. He wants to be someone special to someone who can make his heart pound, not in an anxious way.

Deep down, he's just lonely as his best friends are spending the night with their crushes.

It's not that he's jealous and possessive.

He just wants to be like that too, as an average teenager because he's not feeling "normal" lately.

These days, it's hard for him to stay sane after the moment that he had at the library.

While he's lost in his thoughts, someone sits beside him.

"Hey... You okay?" Mike asks him casually.

Felix jumps as if his heart was going to fall apart.

"God, did you just teleport?!" he shouts while holding his chest, from being surprised.

Mike chuckles and continues, "I didn't, but that'd be nice," while smiling chillingly at him.

"Oh, I'm Mike," he greets him while offering him a handshake.

Felix hesitates for a second but decides to handshake him anyway.

"The name's Felix," he says.

Suddenly, he feels the electricity that he's never felt before.

Strangely, he doesn't feel like his stomach is turning upside down. He doesn't want to puke now, which is odd, considering how he usually acts around strangers.

Mike just smiles with a calm attitude there.

"Oh, gotta go. My girlfriend's done," he says while casually tapping Felix's shoulder.

His feelings are mixed now.

He strangely enjoys the touch, but his heart aches when Mike leaves.

"What the hell is happening...." he mumbles to himself with a confusion filling his head.

Then Joanne comes around, getting Felix back to his sense again.

"Hey... this is your punch..." she says while handing him his cup.

He just glares at her, complaining, "What the hell were you doing that it took you ages to get 2 cups of punch?!"

"Oh, gimme a break! I met Alfred there," she says while rolling her eyes.

Felix chuckles and says, "Hehe yeah, I totally saw that part."

She just frowns at him and responds, "Oh...we are so pathetic..."

They both just sigh again for the hundredth times tonight.

-This Is What You Came For-Calvin Harris, Rihanna starts playing-

Their eyes goggle out as they jump excitedly.

"Joanne, it's our song!"

"We definitely should dance to this!"

They shout at the same time while throwing their cups of punch away.

"You know what? To hell with dates! I'm glad I'm here with my best friend!" Joanne shouts through the loud music.

Felix smiles widely and screams, "It's Rihanna! They should've played her song hours before this!"

They just dance the night away while chuckling at the silly dance moves that they do.

"But she's looking at- Youuuuuu!" they both scream for the song together.

Although they might feel lonely at some point for not having a real date, they start to let those feelings go for the moment. They just look at each other with excitement in their hearts, dancing to their favorite song as the night goes on.

They might not have a person to kiss during the slow dance, but at least they have each other to laugh out loud.

Now that they've realized, it's already more than enough for them. It's so much better than just moping around about how unlucky Joanne and Felix are tonight.

"This is so much better than going with a complete stranger and be awkward with them!" Felix screams while awkwardly dancing around.

"I know, right?!" she replies while taking off her heels to swing comfortably.

In the sea of crowds, the awkward guy and the smart girl are just dancing around like dorks, not thinking about what people say about them.
