Promise

Dear Imena,

We ended up at a beach, and walked the shoreline for a while, just enjoying each other's company.

"So, what did we come out here for?" I asked, finally.

"Maybe I just wanted to spend our last day here at the beach." he responded.

"I don't think my family would have gotten excited and pushed us out of the house if all you wanted to do was come to the beach." I said.

"Yeah, I guess that's true." Milo laughed.

He looked off into the distance, and took a deep breath.

"Well, you know I've been learning about you, your kind, and your traditions over the last couple years that we've been together. I was talking to your family the other day and I learned something new about your people."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a ring. It was a dark red rose on a rose-gold colored band that could be stretched and squeezed to fit on the finger.

"Did you get me a promise ring?" I gasped.

He nodded, "I know it's simple and pretty cheap, but I wanted to show you that I really want you to be in my life no matter what, and I was told this is the best way to do that."

The concept of promise rings is partially borrowed from hybrids. It's like an engagement before an engagement. The ring ensures that the two hybrids will stay loyal to one another, if the promise is broken, the ring is enchanted and meant to break.

"Spirit, I promise that my heart belongs to you and only you." Milo said.

"And mine belongs to you. Forever and always."

We smiled at each other, and Milo put the ring on my right hand. According to tradition, it can be put on a necklace to be worn that way too, and will be transferred to the left hand when the couple is officially engaged.

We wrapped our arms around each other and stood there in silence for a while.

"I love you, Spirit."

"I love you too, Milo."
