2 days later~

Can my life get any more miserable? All I did was forget my jacket and all of a sudden, my friends and I are the talk of the school! And guess what? My aunt donated that same hoodie, along with some other things. She said it was "keeping me closeted" well that was the whole point! All of my other jackets have no hoods and we're not allowed to wear hats inside the school.

At least today's a weekend. I made plans with Lucy and Amelia. Apparently, the boys were coming, too. We were going to the arcade to take photos for a project. We were studying photography in art class and had to submit 10 pictures. We got to work in groups of 7 and to our luck, the 7 of us ended up working together. We were originally going to start at the arcade and meet with the boys at our next location, but they decided to tag along.

The 7 of us were walking to the arcade. Walter and Lucy brought their cameras. Honestly, we looked like tourists.

After taking pictures~

Once we finished, we decided to stop by at a convenience store to take a look at the photos. We entered and sat down. Levi and I walked around to buy things while the others reviewed the pictures. "Hey, are you okay?" Levi, who had been walking around with me, asked. "Of course I am. Why do you ask?" I replied as I grabbed a cup of instant ramen from the shelf. "You do remember what happened at school yesterday, right?" He asked in a worried tone. "Yeah, but that happens all the time. It's not like it's out of the ordinary to be criticized for a sudden change of habit. Especially if you had no choice." I tried not to sound sarcastic, but it was of no avail. Levi's face softened. He frowned at me before pulling me into a hug. "What are you doing?" I whisper-yelled. "Hugging you." He casually replied. I tried to push him off, but he didn't budge. "I know that, you idiot. Why are you hugging me?" I was finally able to pull myself out of his grasp. "You sounded like you could use one. Come on, let's go pay for the food." He draped his arm over my shoulder and pushed me along the aisles of the store before reaching the cashier. There was a person in front of us, so we had to wait for a bit. The person in front did look oddly familiar.

Once they were done, my heart sank. "Dad?!" The man turned to look at me. His face lit up. "Alice... how are you darling?" My dad asked as he let me and Levi step forward to pay. "Don't talk to me. What if Laura sees you?" I replied coldly. I wasn't mad at my father anymore, but I felt my body burning up, like I was angry. "She's waiting in the car. Come on, let's catch up." He patted my shoulder, but I pushed him away. It pained me to be pushing my father away, but I had to do it for safety. "Dad, we can't. If Laura sees us interacting, we're screwed. Don't you remember her warning? Think about mom. Some other time." I looked away from my dad. "Come on, Alice. Let's go. We still need to look at the pictures." Levi tapped my shoulder, saving me from my awkward situation.

"What was that all about?" Levi asked as we returned to where the others were. "Well, that was my father. He wants to catch up, but I can't." I sighed and dropped myself into my seat. A loud thud came along with it. "Yikes. Are you okay?" Walter scrunched his nose up and the others already wore a concerned expression. I nodded and flashed them a reassuring smile. "Yeah. I just ran into my dad-" I was cut off by Amelia. "Your dad?!" She whisper yelled. I rolled my eyes. "It's not that big of a deal. Besides, I'm not mad at him anymore. So, the pictures?" I said with a shrug. "R-right. The photos." Lucy in a state of sudden realization. They don't know the whole story, but I did tell them minor details like the ghosting part, the cheating, and whatnot. No blackmail or cancer was included in my sharing.

She pulled out her camera along with Walter's. We looked through the photos and honestly, they came out really good. "Damn, we snapped!" Jake said with an amused smile. "Nice job, everyone. Elia and Eddie, you guys really outdid yourselves. So much for hiding in the shadows at school." Walter smirked. "Elia?" I asked while tilting my head to the side. "It's a nickname Walter gave me. When I met Walter, he thought I said 'I am Elia,' and now, I just go by that." She shrugged casually.

"Anyway, I think we should get going. Lucy and I will submit these to Mr. James and we'll follow up in the group chat. Sound good?" Eddie said as he placed his camera in its case. We all nodded in agreement and threw away our garbage before leaving the convenience store.

When I reached home, I was greeted by the smell of something sweet. "Aunt Bella? I'm home!" I placed my bag on the sofa and waited for a response. "Just a moment, dear! The cookies are nearly done!" My aunt yelled from the kitchen. "Cookies?" As I said that, my aunt walked out of the kitchen with a plate of chocolate chip cookies. "I wanted to celebrate you finally coming out of your shell and making new friends, so, as a reward, here is a plate of freshly baked goods." She said with a smile. "Well, thank you!" I took a cookie from the plate and took a bite. Holy shit. "What do you think?" She asked. I took another from the plate and held it in front of her. "It's amazing! Try one." Aunt Bella took the pastry from my hand and big into it. "Wow... I can cook!" She devoured the whole thing. I laughed as she complimented herself continuously. "Enough about me. How was your day, sweetheart?" My aunt asked. I froze, remembering the sudden encounter I had with my father. "It was fun. The pictures turned out great. But I did bump into someone." I responded to her question. Her expression went from curious to suspicious. Though the two are similar feelings, the situations they are protrayed in are very different. "Um..." my thoughts were pacing back and forth. Do I tell her the truth? Do I act like it was unimportant? Then, I said the first thing that came to my mind. "It was nobody." I said blankly. "Well if it was that insignificant of an event, it certainly wouldn't be worth mentioning. Now tell me, who did you meet today?" She saw right through me. I took a deep breath and replied. "Don't freak out, okay? It was father." Her eyes widened and before I could do anything else, she yelled. "Howard?! When and where did this happen?!" She held me by my shoulders and spoke in a panicked tone. "Aunt Bella... I'll tell you what happened, but I need you to calm down first." I said and took another cookie. She took a deep breath and nodded. "Okay. Tell me everything that happened, Alice." She said as she looked at me sternly. I gulped and tried my best to recall everything.

Once I was done, she sat there in awe. A cookie she recently bit into was left in her hand. "Oh my. You did the right thing by not communicating with him. That Laura's got eyes everywhere." My aunt said as she pulled me into an endearing hug. "Now go change into something less... wild. We're going to visit your mother." She said, looking at my current outfit.

I stood up with a groan and went to my room. After changing into a white sweater and denim jeans, I went back downstairs where Aunt Bella had been waiting for me. "Much better. Shall we go?" Aunt Bella grabbed the keys and we both left the house.

The ride to the hospital was quiet. I thought about what to say to my mom when we saw her again, but nothing came to mind. When we arrived, I felt like I couldn't walk. My mother was sick and it was always difficult for me to maintain my composure during visits, knowing that one day she might be gone forever. Aunt Bella held my hand as we entered the building. After some inquiry with the nice man at the front desk, we got in the elevator and rode up to the floor her room was on.

We entered the room quietly. My mother turned away from the tv to look at us. Her face lit up as she smiled. "Alice! Bella! What a nice surprise!" My mom said as she extended her arms out to hug me. I walked closer to her with a smile and embraced her. She planted a kiss on my forehead as she greeted me. "Hi, Emily. How are you feeling?" Aunt Bella asked as she also hugged my mom. "The same as always. Though my mood's a bit better now that I have company. Anyway, enough about me, how are the both of you?" My mother said sweetly.

3rd Person View

Alice felt a sudden rush of extreme pity as she looked at her mom. Alice had felt more than standard pity and worry for her mother, but now, she was cautious as ever. It was a more intense feeling of total anxiety. Emily's hair had been shaved off completely, she looked so fragile, you'd wonder how long she can stay alive. Despite everything she's going through, she somehow managed to keep up a positive attitude and always have a smile on her face. At least that's what the nurses say. Alice knew she was a very optimistic person, but who knows what happens when Emily Foreman is all alone in her hospital room. The sounds of the hospital were completely drowned out by Alice's thoughts.

How long has she suffered?

Will my mom survive?

What will happen to me if mother passes?

Do we even have enough money for her treatments anymore?

How does she stay so positive when her organs are literally dying?

All of these questions and more. They overwhelmed the young girl. Which is why she excused herself and left the room to take a breather. When Alice stepped out of the room, she sat on the bench and closed her eyes. As Alice calmed her worrying mind, her phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled out her phone to check who was calling her. She smiled and answered it.

"Hey."
