Small Talk

When I woke up the next day, my mom was making lunch in the kitchen.

"Something smells amazing mom! What are you making?"

"Oven baked ribs and cornbread." She replied.

"It's making me hungry now." I grumbled.

"Would you like some hot chocolate or tea?" She asked. She doesn't let us drink coffee, she says caffeine is not good for our growing bodies. Even our tea is decaf.

"Tea please, I'll make it."

"I have a fresh pot right here. Just get your cup." She placed the teapot on the counter in front of me.

As I sat down and was pouring the tea into my cup, she asked how my date went.

"It was fine," I smiled as I put my left hand up in front of my face and wiggled my fingers.

"Oh my gosh, Cassie...what did you do?" She went closer and looked at the ring, then she looked at me shaking her head in disbelief.

I gave her a detailed account of our date. I love how I can tell her anything. "...he asked me to be his girlfriend and when I said yes he gave me this ring. We have matching rings. How cute is that, right?"

"It is cute. It must have cost a fortune!" She exclaimed as I told her the designer box it came in. Then her face became serious. "You finally agreed to be with him, huh?"

I nodded while trying to gauge her reaction.

"You know I don't meddle with your affairs unless I have to, but I just want to make sure that you know what you're doing."

That question made me think if I really did the right thing by saying yes. What if I was just carried away by the magic of the moment? Nah, I don't think so, the butterflies in my tummy when I'm with him says it all. "Don't worry mom, I'm sure. I do like him a lot he's kind and sweet but it seems he doesn't want to kiss me." I told her about the movies and the kiss on the forehead.

"I think I like him too!" we both laughed.

Just then my phone rang, it was Mark.

"Hey Cas, I was wondering if I can borrow your Physics notes?

"Sure! I can take pictures if you like and send it to you."

"Nah, I need to give something to Jason later so I'll just drop by and do it myself. Is that fine?"

"Yup. What do you need it for anyway?" I remember taking the test last Friday so I don't know why he would need it again.

"Heather missed the test and she's taking the make up test tomorrow. I can't find my notes, I must have left them in my locker."

"Oh." I didn't even try to hide my disappointment.

It's amazing how he always knows how I'm feeling or thinking. "Look, I'm sorry about how she acted last night. If you don't want to share your notes with her, it's okay."

"It's fine, really. No issue whatsoever."

"Thank you. I'll be over after lunch. Are you going anywhere today?"

"I'll be here."

"See yah, and by the way, you looked terrific last night," the call ended.

His statement made me gasp. My heart skipped a beat too. How can this happen with both of them, I wondered. Do I have feelings for him too? What the heck is wrong with me.

"I'm gonna go upstairs and shower." I told my mom.

She didn't say anything but I can see the concern in her eyes. She's not the type to ask.
