Chapter 9

Dieko was dazed for a while on hearing this.

' what do you mean she can never have children? ' Dieko quizzed.

' Sir this is highly inappropriate, I assured the lady to keep this confidential. '

' Doctor Richard we've come a long way, this lady means a lot to me. I assure you my utmost discretion. '

' The lady, her last abortion was unsuccessful and therefore caused severe damage to her womb. '

This was news to Dieko, Lewa had never mentioned ever committing an abortion. He had asked her if she had gotten pregnant when she had been raped to which she had replied no. So when had that happened? It was obvious that she had lied to him.

He walked out of Dr Richard's office as if in a trance.

When he got to the reception office, the first thing that caught his eye was the T.V screen. On it, he could see Lewa gyrating her hips to the beat of the music. He was more than shocked. Lewa in a music video wearing very little. He could only stare. When he had recovered from the momentary shock he left the hospital and drove straight to Lewa's apartment.

On getting there he made use of his spare key to enter the apartment. He headed straight for the bedroom and without knocking he burst into the room. The sight he saw made his knees weak.

James was pounding into Lewa who seemed to be in lust land. Neither of them even noticed his presence. He walked back out of the apartment and sat in his car as if in a trance. Things started becoming clear to him.

Everything about Lewa had been a lie. First, he had met her at a club, then she had avoided going to public places with him probably afraid that he would find out somehow. She had also refused him to see her parents or communicate with them via phone giving him excuses. When he had told her that she was married she hadn't been discouraged from seeing him. If she was a truly decent girl like his mom had insinuated she would have stopped seeing him. Now he knew why she had panicked the first time he had tried sleeping with her, she knew she was not a virgin and she didn't want him to question her chastity so she had formed a lie about being raped.

He cursed himself for having been so foolish. He then remembered he was yet to meet with Dr Alimi so he drove back to the hospital.

' Good day sir. ' Dieko greeted the doctor as he shook hands with him.

' Good day to you. How may I be of help to you? '

' My wife, Mrs Marcualy you had lunch with her sometime last month. I wonder if you remember. ' Dieko said observing the Doctor's expression

' Of course, I do. What a remarkable woman! ' exclaimed the doctor

' I wonder if you will not mind shedding light on your discussion that day? ' Dieko pressed.

' Of course not. Our meeting that day was purely coincidental. I was only asking her if her husband was aware of her crisis. ' The doctor said

' What crisis? ' asked an alarmed Dieko.

' You see, about seven months before that I diagnosed Mrs Macualy with third-stage ovarian cancer '

' What? ' exclaimed a shocked Dieko.

' Mrs Macualy is dying sir, she said she did not want to have you worry. She is currently on medications but I'm afraid she doesn't have much time left if she doesn't undergo the necessary surgery.

Dieko was no longer listening to Doctor Alimi. He made a mad dash out of the hospital building and into his car. He needed to get Nike to the hospital ASAP. No wonder she had given him the condition she gave for the divorce. It was because she knew she didn't have much time left and she wanted to die while giving their son the impression that he was a loving husband until her death.

As Dieko drove home his thoughts were all over the place. He prayed to God for the first time since this year began that Nike was sincerely alright. How could he not have noticed? It was at this moment he realized that he had been blinded by lust and not love. He loved Nike and he couldn't imagine his life without the mother of his son.

' God please give me a chance to right my wrong ' he earnestly prayed as he got down from his car.

As he rushed upstairs to their room, he couldn't help but notice that the house was eerily quiet. On entering the room he saw Nike who appeared to be sleeping peacefully with Rotimi by her side who was trying in vain to wake her up.
