"You can stay here miss"
The taxi driver dropped her in front of what she assumed was an inn. At least that is what she hoped it was.
After the accident three nights before she never wanted to go back to a room that Mike Taylor had booked.
All she had now was the cash her secretary had sent, he'd given it to her, what was left after booking a room.
She'd gotten the first flight she could find to Transylvania. It was her last hope, her last chance at freedom.
Last month one of her readers from Transylvania had send her a postcard; that postcard she still carried around in her pocket, because when she touched it, the demons disappeared. If only she had not locked that inside her bag in the trunk of the car, the man would have still been alive.
She takes a deep breath.
If only a postcard from Transylvania was so powerful, could this place be her sanctuary. A little far fetched honestly, to come countries away for what could simply be a bluff.
However, she has nothing to lose; her work ia all remote and she has enough money to spare the expenses. She would go to the farthest corners of the earth for only a hope of safety.
She looks at the door of the inn from the car window, before gingerly stepping out, and when she finally does she gasps. There is power in the land.
Slumbering, suppressed but it is still there, like a nervous system under the earth. Waves of energy brush against her soles. Everything is connected. The ground, the trees, the rivers, the animals. She can feel them all.
Scared, she withdraws in her mind. It is so vast- this system, that she could drift away and never come back.
So many things, so many lives.
Shivering she makes her way to the inn. There are no spirits here she notices, they aren't latched to peoples backs like shadows. That is an improvement at least.
"Can I rent a room here please?" Her voice is the same as always, matter of fact and uninviting. Good. She doesn't like people prying or developing small talk. It never ended well.
For them.
The woman on the counter however is colder than she is. Her eyes went from the hair on Katies's head to the shoes on her feet. She was beautiful, more than anything Katie had ever seen.
"You are beautiful" she says.
It came out of her unbidden but true.
The woman hisses; her eyes narrowed to slits and she backs to a corner.
"You see me?" She asked.
"Yes"
"How old do I look?"
"Late 20's"
The lady looked at her as if she had seen some ghost.
"Can I have a room please?" She repeated. Katie shouldn't have said anything. She didn't like people asking about her, what right had she to ask about somebody else.
"You can?" It was more a question than a statement. She waited, knowing anything else she said could very well have her kicked out. This was the only inn in this city. She needed this room dammit.
"Room 44. Upstairs " The woman hands her the keys, making sure to not touch her she noticed. She nodded, too lost in her head to smile.
That done, she walked up the stairs.
She sees past the glamour
How?
No human has ever been able to do it before.
************************
A woman stands at the gate of the inn. Her gaze following the young human as she makes her way up: tears glisten in her eyes.
History will repeat itself. The story will climax where it once started.
Fate has dragged them all to their beginning.
The knights.
The pawns.
The king
The queen.
Her heart saddens for she is of no more help. Her sight has failed her; their fate she can no longer see.
She just hopes the wards she had placed on that card could be of some help.
They were her last gift.
