Chapter 5

Alice left the brothel for the first time in a while. Soon it was supposed to be her day off. She was going to go out with Philip for the first time and that was a dream come true on its own. She had imagined a day like that, where she would be able to walk next to him and enjoy a sweet strawberry tart at some of the cute sweet shops at the middle area, while they watched the carriages pass by and her the melodic sound of the birds. He would smile at her and gift her another book that she would be able to read at night and think of her.  Than now would never happen. Philip would be just a past memory she would have to live with for her rest of her life as she remembered their sweet moments and their cruel parting. A separation she had so foolishly caused afraid for his safety.

In front of the brothel awaited a carriage. It enormous, made from dark wood and golden details. It didn't look at all like those small ones Angelica used to call to go around and do her business. This thing could fit in for people easily. Its huge wheels had carvings of the sun and the clouds on them. Such fine artistry. It was the first time she had seen something so elegant and beautiful be used in such a daily task.

"Will you go in?" Nacht asked her as he had been holding the door open for a while. Lifting up her long and shabby dress she entered the carriage and felt the soft velvet of the seat's pillow. This seat was even better than the couches back there. Nacht soon followed, entering too and the carriage shook slightly from its weight. He sat in front of her at the other side and smiled but she completely ignored him and turned her head away. She didn't trust him; she couldn't trust anyone.

The only reason she had chosen to leave this place was because she knew it wasn't actually a choice. If she demanded to stay there Angelica would have killed her, she was sure of it since she would have to return her payment. So the natural course of things when you never had the freedom of deciding where you want to be was to passed around to the best buyer like a sack of potatoes.

"I was expecting you to cause more of a ruckus." Nacht told her and hit the front of the carriage with his palm, signaling the driver to begin. Soon she heard the sound of the horse moving and the carriage began.

"There was not really a choice to begin with. I do not like making a fool of myself." She told him still trying to avoid his stare. His blue eyes were chilling, almost as if she was staring at a block of ice.

"You are smart after all." Nacht complimented her.

"If I was smart I wouldn't end up being sold and becoming a slave. So who do you want me to sleep with?" She asked him, not embarrassed at all. Why else would he buy a girl from a brothel? Literally that was the only thing she could do. She didn't know how to clean or cook. She could read and write but she was self-taught and she couldn't do math even if her life was depending on it. She literally had no value except her pretty face.

"Well, that is a very straight forward way to talk about your job. Relax. I won't have you do anything of that short. I didn't buy you because you are a pretty girl. I bought you for your powers. You are a magician after all, an attacker as I heard." He told her and her eyes widened. How did Angelica manage to find a buyer for that so soon? There were literally just a few hours apart but she had sold her off as a magician. She couldn't imagine what that woman was able to do for money.

"And what will you do with my powers? I am useless. I do not know how to use them." Alice asked and he scoffed.

"That is the easiest thing. But do not worry your life will be much better. Hard, you will have to train and things won't be easy where we are going but there will be no Angelica's where we go." He told her.

Was there any good in her believing him? His voice sounded sincere and there was no obvious malice in his expression. She had seen many faces through her life, heard many lies and had been actually deceived from early on, just to learn that people were cruel and didn't care about others. She didn't want to view him as her savior. She didn't want to believe in him just to be hurt again. Time would only show but for now she viewed him as a potential liar.

"I see" She mumbled and moved the small white curtain to have free access to the window. She wanted to look outside. She had assumed that they were heading towards the upper levels considering how luxurious the carriage was and how well dressed he looked. He wasn't a simple man; she was sure about that.

To her surprised though the carriage was not heading where she believed. She stared as they left the kingdom stunned, her jaw dropping. The man noticing her surprise laughed and crossed his legs as if he was waiting for her question. Something started to cause her unbelievable worry as they headed towards the kingdoms walls, ready to leave the only home she ever knew.

"Won't you ask me where we are heading to?" Nacht asked, unable to wait anymore.

"Where are you taking me?"

"We are heading to the Kingdom of Sol."

"Nyx's biggest enemy?" Alice asked full of surprise.

Things had suddenly taken a very unexpected turn.
