Chapter 8
Escape
Hearing the beep of the key card I keep my eyes closed as the door creaks open the sound of laughter filling the room.
"Dr.Wells your genius never ceases to amaze me." The older man says as he enters the room.
"Not as much as your's does Dr.Heirnsburg your work in cellular regeneration is inspiring. As soon as I found this child I thought of no one better to study him than you."
Despair. Despair is what I feel as soon as I hear that monster's voice enter the room, my heart pounding causing the heart monitor to screech in response.
Anger. Anger is what rises in me as I realize that none of this would be happening if Eobard just didn't show up. I could've killed everyone in that Antique store, but instead the man with the yellow mask had to come in and ruin the day; but there's no point in dwelling in the past. I have to look towards the future and focus on survival if I have any wish of escaping this place because expecting things to go right isn't in the playbook for me.
Calming myself down the heart rate monitor quells its beeping as the doctors enter the room.
"Tell me Dr.Heirnsburg what have you discovered so far about our little mystery child?" Dr.Wells asks as his voice comes closer and closer.
"Your theory was correct Harrison as the child was dying I was monitoring his cells and they went into a state of increased cellular regeneration while he was choking, but when he died they stopped. His body was dead I checked it myself, but when we took the most recent tests his cells seemed to go back to acting in a state as though he was still alive, seemingly tricking his heart into restarting; the rest of his body quickly following suit. That's not even taking into account the regrowth in his arm the tests are still being run on that." The so called Dr.Heirnsburg's voice is excited talking quickly right next to me, his breath hitting the side of my face smelling of coffee and onions.
"Fascinating…" I hear Dr.Wells mutter under his breath. "Continue to run tests to see if we'll be able to replicate this ability because if we can... it can change the very future as we know it." I listen as I hear Dr.Wells's steps leave the room as Heirnsburg quickly agrees to run more tests leaving us alone.
Slowly opening my eyes I'm forced to squint as the light above me blinds me. "H-hello w-where am I?" I ask weakly as the throw up on my face begins to burn slightly, my nose having already gotten used to the tangy smell.
"There's no need to be afraid, child, you are doing a service to the whole world and once we finish you'll be released." The doctor says while my vision is still unobstructed by the light.
"Y-you don't want to do this my dads a detective he'll find me!" I shout feigning the appearance of a frightened child listening to the laughs of the doctor as I take out my yo-yo from my inventory. Holding the yo-yo by the wire between my index finger and middle finger I put pressure on my arm pushing against the table to get a space between my arm and the leather strap slowly threading the wire between them.
"Your adoptive father won't look for you here child, and don't be so selfish. Your body could hold the key to the cure to cancer, the cure to regrowing limbs, you can help so many people. Don't you want to save lives?" He questions as I feel warm blood begin to run down my arm from the wire cutting into my skin as I begin to loop it around the leather strap.
"Help people, why would I want to do that? I earned this power through hard work and if you think you can replicate it in a lab you are sorely mistaken." I growl out while holding the now fully looped string beginning to cut through the leather like butter.
"Well we'll see about that last part now won't we." Cutting through the strap my hand shoots up undoing the strap on my head as I slowly sit up staring at the back of the doctor who is messing with some of the syringes on a tray. "In your body could lie the cures to so many diseases so don't think I enjoy inflicting pain, but any chance I have at saving her I'll take." He says while I undo the strap on my other arm that has now regrown to the elbow now going to unstrap my feet.
"And who is it that you would torture a child for?" I ask while undoing the strap of my right foot going to undo the left.
"My daughter was diagnosed with cancer last year. They say that she won't make it through the year but if Wells and I can figure out what makes you you we can save her and so many more." The doctor's voice is unwavering as I undo the last strap silently moving my legs off the table sliding off my feet landing on the cold tile.
"Well it's too bad that you won't be able to see your daughter recover Doctor but you'll see her soon." Before the doctor has any time to process what's happening I fling the yo-yo with a flick of my wrist watching as blood begins to spray from his neck painting the white room red; while his head slides off his neck his face adorning a look of shock as his body quickly goes limp like a puppet that lost its marionette his head thudding against the floor blood spilling out.
Rushing over to the decapitated I grab the doctor's keycard that's clipped to his white lab coat before checking his pockets for a phone or wallet. Finding only the wallet I take the ID and cash. Running to the door I scan the keycard creeping open the door I look out in the hall watching as many other people in white lab coats walk by.
"A hospital?" I mutter to myself while walking out in the hall. Why would Eobard take me to a hospital? Rushing to the first person I see I grab the shoulder of a young woman with brown hair pulled back in a ponytail wearing a white lab coat and white pants with a stethoscope around her collar.
"I need your phone!" I demand staring into the doctor's brown eyes as a look of shock quickly grows on her face.
"O-oh my gosh are you ok w-what room are you in? Don't worry we'll get you help!" She sputters out while signaling some nurses nearby. I don't have time for this! I don't know what Eobard's plan is but I have to leave and disappear. In his eyes I'm his key to speed and I will not end up at the bottom of the ocean because he views me as a failed project when he can't regain his speed.
"I SAID GIVE ME YOUR PHONE!" I shout while shoving the nurse against the wall, her eyes growing wide as she reaches into her pocket, pulling out her phone, already unlocked, handing it to me as I quickly dial in Kara's number that I memorized. As the phone begins to ring I look around me all the previous commotion around me is at a standstill as everyone stares at me. Looking down I scowl at my bloody lab coat combining with my throw up stained face I'm sure I make quite the image.
"Hello?" I hear Kara question over the phone as a rare sense of hope begins to grow in me.
"K-kara it's me, it's Theo. I need help, a man he has me he's going to kill me I need help!" I shout making my voice sound as frantic as possible.
"W-what calm down tell me where you are I'll send help." She says with surprise and concern laced in her tone.
"I'm at Shepherds Hospital in Midvale please come quickly, he'll be back soon." I say while looking down at the bloodied key card of the doctor I killed.
"O-ok help will be there soon." She says while I hear a click signaling the end of the phone call. Feeling a smile grace my face I let my arm drop looking down the hall to see two big men with the young doctor leading them towards me.
"Hey kiddo you're going to need to come with us ok? You're sick we can make you better." She says before a distant crack draws my attention behind her as the lights on the ceiling begin to break a streak of lightning trailing behind them. As the red lightning reaches us within the blink of an eye the doctor and two guards collapse as well as all the bystanders around us leaving the man in yellow standing in front of me with glowing red eyes letting out a demonic chuckle as he slowly walks towards me red lightning dancing around him.
Stumbling back I feel my heart rate begin to rocket against my ribs, fear taking grip of my neck. "You know Theo I figured you'd escape, I've watched you your whole life out of mere curiosity because you see where I come from; You didn't exist and trust me I checked, but this works in my favor at first I was uncertain about your ability but as soon as I was sure." He says while crouching down to my eye level. "I knew that I just had to have you."
As his hand slowly reaches towards my face I hear a crash down the hall as a laser shoots right by my face hitting the area right where Reverse Flash was.
"Get away from him!" I hear Kara shout as she flys down the hall as I watch a red streak run around her, Kara quickly hovering protectively in front of me, Reverse Flash standing across from her.
"Supergirl, I wasn't expecting to see you for years!" Eobard laughs with joy while pointing around her at me. "But you won't be able to protect him forever and once you're gone… he's fair game. Everything is ready for you Theo, soon you'll be mine!" Leaving a streak of red lightning Eobard disappears as Kara slowly lands looking around at all the destruction and bodies in worry before turning to me.
"Th-Theo what happened to you?!" She asks, rushing to me holding up my arm that's missing.
"Kara I'm ok now… you're here" I say with a wide grin holding her shoulder. "But we should leave. I don't know if or when he'll be coming back so we should leave." The seriousness of my tone seems to get through to her as she nods her head furiously picking me up bridal style flying out of the hospital.
Kara flies slowly out of the hospital revealing the small town surrounding us.
"Who was that, why did he take you, what did he want with you?!" Kara sputters out while we fly making me chuckle.
"Let's land first this is something you may need to sit down for." Kara nods, flying towards a wooded mountain landing near a small pond she puts me down from her arms as I walk over washing all the throw up and blood off of my face.
Finishing I stare at my reflection before I feel a strong hand on my shoulder whipping me around. "Hey you have some explaining to do mister I want answers. How did you even know to call me?!" Kara's face is laced with shock as I sigh walking to a seat sitting down Kara following suit sitting down next to me.
"Kara I called you because I knew that you were like me." Kara's face goes white as I hide a smirk behind my mask. "When you hugged me it was the strongest hug that I've ever had so I figured you were like me with special powers and I was right." I say with a smile as Kara's face slowly regains its color.
"What special powers do you have?" She asks as I raise up my severed arm that has regrown up to the middle of my forearm.
"I have accelerated healing, which is why that crazy speedster guy is after me… I think?"
"What do you want to do now then, I can fly you back to the hotel if you want?" She says with a small awkward chuckle.
"The man in yellow said that he will always try to get me, that everything is ready for me and I don't think it will be safe for my family if I stayed. I have to leave, I have to disappear, Kara, that man can never find me until I am sure I can protect the people I care about." Kara gives me a look of pity and although I wasn't able to get as close to her as I would have liked her help in my escape and future disappearance is vital.
"So what can I do to help you?"
