Chapter 5

[Carla's Pov]

Chris and I were standing in front of a building early in the morning.

"This is where I traced the call to" I informed Chris, checking the paper I wrote the address to be extra sure.

"Are you sure this is where the mastermind will be?" Chris asked, looking at the building skeptically.

"I am not sure if he will still be here but according to the data gathered after checking his calls with Agent Romano, it was in this building he usually calls him. He probably didn't think that Romano would be caught and didn't bother to change locations" I said as I folded the paper into my pocket.

"So, shall we go in?" He asked, gesturing to the door.

"Yeah, I informed Director Adams before we came here so he should be here soon with some backup. We will scope the area before he comes though" I said as Chris nodded his head absentmindly.

"What are you thinking of? Let's go in" I said, poking his shoulder with a smile on my face.

"Right, let's go" He said as he entered the building.

"Well, just go right in. It is not like there's any trap set for you" I mumured sacarstically before also entering the building, making sure to be alert.

I've entered enough criminal lairs to know that there will be traps set for intruders, which in this case, is me.

"You have to be more careful Chris, I don't even know how you are the top agent" I whispered as I got to his side.

"Well, nothing bad happened, right? It also seems like there aren't any security cameras, you don't have to be so stiff" He said casually as I looked around.

He was right, there was no security cameras... in plain sights.

"That's where you are wrong, he is someone who could cook up a big scheme that even I haven't completely  deciphered and yet you think he won't put any security cameras in his den. They are probably hidden out of sight so as to let intruders relax their vigilance" I whispered calmly as I scanned the area for the hidden cameras.

I looked around searching the areas where cameras could be hidden. A vase, chandelier, and smoke detector stood out to me.

"Bingo! I found the cameras" I whispered, smiling as I noticed cameras in those places.

"Wow! You are good" Chris complimented as his eyes moved towards the direction I was looking at.

I nodded slightly as I smiled a little.

"We shouldn't alert him, Adams should be here in 5 minutes" I said as Chris nodded his head.

"Ok, but before that, let us explore this place" Chris said before walking towards a desk.

"Wait!" I whispered-yelled when I noticed something out of place but Chris didn't listen.

*Clink*

A loud mechanical noise sounded as one of the tiles Chris stepped on sunk deeper into the ground.

"You just activated a trap, good job Chris" I said sacarstically as I rolled my eyes.

"How was I supposed to know there would have been a trap here?" He asked a little annoyed as he scowled.

"Just don't move..." I paused midway when I noticed he had already turned to walk towards me.

*Clank*

Another mechanically sound echoed once Chris removed his leg.

"Great! You weren't supposed to remove your leg, as long as there was any weight on that tile, the trap wouldn't have been completely activated. Can't you just listen?" I asked annoyed as he got to my side.

"Well, sorry but do you know what trap was activated?" He asked unapologetically as I scanned the area, looking and listening for any clue.

I heard rumbling noise and my face paled as I realised what it meant.

"What happened?" Chris asked worriedly as he noticed my expression.

"We have to get out of this building now! Thanks to your little stunt, this whole building is about to collapse!" I yelled, running towards the door as some parts of the building started collapsing.

We managed to get out of the building in the nick of time as the entire building collapsed, dust particles floating every where as we coughed.

"Tsk! All the evidence and clues we could have used are probably all destroyed now" I said slightly annoyed as I looked at the rubble that stood where the building was before.

"Sorry" Chris apologised as he looked at the ground, not letting me see his face.

I didn't even bother to answer him as I saw the police cars pull over beside us and Director Adams got down.

"Is this the place?" Director Adams asked skeptically as he looked at the rubble.

"It was until someone triggered a trap and made the building collapse." I said glancing at Chris before turning my attention back to Adams.

Adams looked at downcast Chris and seemed to realise what happened.

"Well, I will try to see if we can still save any file or evidence from there" He said, giving a signal for the men to check the rubble.

"That might work but I really doubt it. For the mastermind to have set a trap that could destroy the whole building, he probably destroyed any valuable files before that." I said as I slid my hands into my pocket.

Director Adams seemed disappointed while Chris finally looked up with an unreadable expression on his face.

"At least, let's still try" Adams said before moving towards the rubble to help.

Chris and I were silent until I turned to face him.

His usually gelled hair was messed up and his clothes were stained with some dirts. Even with how rough he looks like, he still managed to look handsome which is really annoying me cause I am sure I looked awful with my messy black hair and the dirts sticking to me, I need a good wash when I get home.

"What do you want to say?" I asked coldly, noticing he had something he wanted to say.

"... I apologise, I didn't listen and it cost us a lot. I will stop trying to be the leader in our little partnership and be more careful" He said after hesitating for a while.

I looked at him, trying to judge if he was sincere before sighing.

If he was lying, he sure is good at acting cause he seems geniue.

"Just try to listen more, no one is the leader in our group, we are patners, that's why it is called a partnership" I said smiling before leaving, not noticing the smile on Chris' lips.
