The day went by without Devin noticing that all his classes were over. Thursday and Friday meant regular lectures. After all, they had to take up normal subjects if they ever want to work outside Exorcism.
Devin was on his way back to his dorm room when he saw Margaux. She looked awful. Her hair was messy, her uniform was wrinkled, and she didn't wear any makeup.
"Are you okay?" he asked. Margaux just stared at her blankly before walking away. "What's her problem?"
"She said she felt a monster." A voice made Devin look behind him.
Jessica walked towards him and sighed. "She's never been the same after yesterday."
Her teammates were just as confused as Devin. Margaux didn't bully or insult anyone today and it wasn't like her. She also hated going out without makeup and messy hair, but she's out in the sun looking like she hadn't slept in weeks.
The boy from before, whose name was Orlando came up to Devin. "Bro, did something happen after we left?"
Devin shook his head. "We split up into three groups to find Margaux. There was an announcement that she left the arena, but we never knew what happened when she was alone."
"Were there any suspicious aura in the arena?" Jessica asked.
Again, Devin shook his head. "No. And if there were, the twins would be able to detect it."
Jessica and Orlando looked at each other. They didn't know that Andrei and Andrew joined Team Lea that led to the ultimate defeat of their team. The team didn't even bother protesting. They were too occupied with what's going on with Margaux.
Devin bid farewell to the two and went to his room where the twins were already in the living room, playing board games. He was getting used to the warmth and presence of other people that he couldn't help but smile.
His phone rang and he quickly picked it up.
"Meet me at the Monument of the Greats in 30 minutes," a male voice spoke.
When Devin was about to ask who it was, the caller hung up. Confused, he shrugged the thoughts away and continued his cooking. He was fifty-fifty if he should go. What if it was a bully and he would assault him?
I'm not going. Devin thought.
"What am I doing here?" Devin asked himself as he stood beside the water fountain. He told the twins that he had to be somewhere but got the twin's reluctant permission. Students were safe inside the campus, but they must be indoors before the curfew, which was 7 PM.
The Monument of the Greats was a tribute to the first 12 Exorcists. It was a statue of twelve people lifting their swords in the air. They were standing over a rock with a woman in the middle while the others were standing below her. The Monument was located in the middle of the Y-shaped buildings with four small water fountains around it.
"What are we doing here?" Rodney asked. He was dragged by Kagura where they followed Devin. The duo hid behind a tree a few meters away from Devin. "Why are we following Devin?"
"Shh," Kagura said and narrowed her eyes to see clearly. Her gut instincts took over her and decide to investigate Devin to prove that he's innocent.
They were crouching and hiding behind a bush when someone whispered from behind them.
"What are you two doing?"
"We think Devin is–"
Kagura stopped herself. She looked behind her and saw the twins grinning.
"You think Devin is what?" Andrew asked, gesturing his hand for her to continue.
Rodney was, as always, speechless around the twins. He was bowing and shaking. They got busted.
"We think Devin is going out on a date," Kagura lied.
The twins crouched behind them and looked over at the frail boy. Devin was looking around and he seemed nervous, two signs of meeting someone for the first time.
"Holy swords. Are you sure?" Andrei said and grinned.
"W-We think so," Kagura said and returned her gaze on Devin. Although she was bad at lying, her serious demeanor always made people believe her. People just think that she's telling the truth all the time.
A few minutes later, a hooded boy walked over to Devin. The four's eyes widened after seeing it was Morris. He said something to Devin, and they walked to a more secluded place.
"Shoots. Devin is seeing Morris?" Rodney fake gasped. They had to stand with their ground and lie. The twins didn't say anything and continued following the two.
They stopped beside the small forest park and looked around before walking inside. The forest was infamous because of its reputation as a popular dating spot.
While the twins were silent, Kagura was examining Devin and Morris's behavior. What do they need to talk about? Morris was from a well-known Exorcist family while Devin was an orphan. She couldn't help but wonder what Morris needs.
If it was about something, she had to know. Especially if it was regarding Devin. He was a boy that was bullied. What if he got bullied here again? Even when she seemed heartless because of her cold demeanor, her heart was soft.
The two stopped at a small clearing while the four crouched and got near when the twins stopped the younger two.
"Cover your aura," Andrew said. He inhaled and hid his presence.
"Morris will see you if you get nearer," Andrei added and followed his brother.
Since Kagura and Rodney were from a family with Apostle bearers, they knew the basics of Exorcism. They hid their aura just like the two and got nearer Devin and Morris.
They didn't catch the first part of their conversation since they had to be careful not to be spotted. They positioned themselves under a bush beside a tree a few feet away.
"So, do you accept my proposal?" Morris asked.
Andrei scrunched his face and whispered, "That's a very weird way of asking someone."
Kagura wanted to shush them but she couldn't do that to her seniors.
"I-I'll think about it," Devin said.
Morris shook his head. "It's not really a proposal. It will benefit you more than it will benefit me."
"Benefit? Did he mean friends with benefits?" Andrew asked.
Again, Kagura wanted to silence them since they kept on talking. If only she was born two years ahead, she could scold the two.
"I don't know," Devin said. "I mean, you're a good person but I'm not sure."
The four peeping students gasped at what Devin said. And their gasp got louder when Morris blushed and looked away.
"Way to go Little Curls."
"Shh," Kagura couldn't help but silence the two. It was getting on her nerves.
"I-I have never done this before if you must know," Morris said. "Before, it was people who chase after me. Now I'm asking you nicely."
They all looked at each other and returned their gaze at the two. Was Kagura wrong? Maybe Morris was only interested in Devin because he liked him.
As confusing as it was, Kagura and Rodney's lie seemed like the truth at this point.
"I think we need to leave them alone," Andrei said and turned around. He used a skill and was gone in a split second. Andrew looked at Devin and Morris again and followed his brother.
"We need to learn that skill," Kagura said.
Rodney followed and crawled away, with Kagura behind him.
Meanwhile, the two were enveloped with silence.
"I don't think something like that needs a speech or anything," Devin said. "I-I think you were over the top."
Morris looked at him and pursed his lips, "What do you mean?"
"Friendship just blooms. Not something you chase," Devin replied with a smile. "Friends aren't people that you just go after because you want to feel friendly. You go after them and befriend them because you like them, platonically."
"So, you mean…"
"I'll be your friend," Devin said and gave Morris a toothy grin.
Morris was taken aback for a second. He was speechless. All his life he was looked up to by his peers and other students because of his father's position in the Union. The Von Schweitzer Family has been an Exorcist family since the first century of Exorcism.
"I have to go back," Devin said. "My big brothers are waiting for me."
"Big brothers?"
"Yep. Andrei and Andrew."
"Oh," was all Morris could say. Devin waved his hand and left the boy inside the forest when a taller boy walked up to Morris.
His hair was blonde and was long that it reached his shoulders. His height and build looked powerful and he knew that there were others that was listening.
"That went easier than I thought," he said.
"I still don't know why the twins tolerate this," Morris said and looked up to the other boy. "They even followed them here."
"You noticed, huh?"
"They didn't even bother hiding their killing intent. You were like this at the laser tag too, Margaux became crazy after feeling it," Morris rolled his eyes and brought out his earphones. "But what seemed to be the problem was that no one else seemed to be bothered by it."
"Not all people could see what we see," the older boy said. "It's almost night, I have to go. Bye Morris."
The older boy waved his hand before disappearing into thin air. He was a third year, meaning he had to go to the Purgatory for patrol.
Morris sighed and looked at the direction Devin went.
"Goodbye, big brother," he said and sighed, walking outside the forest and planning what his next move is.
