The road home was already stuck in her mind. Julie walks down the street, kicking small pebbles around while whistling.
It's been three years since she lived with her aunt and uncle. Three years since she left her country, three years since she saw her parents. Julie has gotten used to feeling lonely, it was a daily occurrence already.
Not that her parents left the world for good or anything. Everything started with her getting a scholarship, of course, the school where she was offered was thousands of kilometers away. How she got the scholarship? She doesn't know. All she knows that everything was normal before she got that scholarship.
But of course, like any other person, she has a secret. Well, it might not be a secret when some people knew of it. But hey still a secret.
[I can't believe it's already 4]
[I'm late, I'm late, I'm late']
[Frick I forgot about our anniversary]
[I wish I could confess to her]
[He looks hot]
Of course, she has mind-reading abilities and there was no filter. Was it helping her life? Well base on her social status, she's not popular. Two she's not a social outcast. Three, she can't sleep for the love of God.
Julie arriving at her doorstep, walks in not before greeting. "Aunt Jude, Uncle Rudy I'm home!" Closing the door behind her, as she strides to the kitchen.
Sitting down on the dining table, she sighs as she tries to grab the cookies on her table. [Ooo great Julie's home] Julie could hear her Aunt's thoughts from the kitchen. Julie lightens up slightly, her aunt was home!
Her Aunt, Jude Millers was a cool woman. As much as she loves her mom, she can't help but be much more amazed by her aunt. Aunt Jude was a police officer and has been since she was a baby. Not only that she makes a mean mac and cheese.
[Is that kid eating my cookies?]Hearing that Julie instantly lets go of the cookie in her hand, as her aunt walks in.
Her aunt raised an eyebrow, looking at her in a suspicious gaze. "Young lady, you didn't touch the cookies, did you?"
[She better not, that batch was for Rudy]
Julie shocked her head and raised her hands in surrender. "I swear on my love of milk, I did not touch the cookies," She said nervously.
Aunt Judy smiled and walked towards Julie, "you get to eat cookies after dinner, for now, control that monster in your stomach." Aunt Judy said as Julie's stomach grumbled in hunger. Flustered, Julie got up and walked up to her room.
[That kid, what is her stomach made of]
Yeah, Aunt Judy, that's a question Julie always asks herself. The fact that she's the type to gain straight up 5 pounds over a cookie, makes herself wonder is it worth it to have a monster-like stomach.
"Wait, Aunt Judy, why are you home early?" Julie asks before heading up the stairs.
[The chief kicked me out for staying in for two weeks]
"Day off" Her aunt smiled, Julie slowly nods. "Yeah day off, my ass" Julie muttered.
Walking up the stairs Julie sluggishly goes into her room. She jumps onto her bed right at the moment she opened the door, before sighing in relief. A minute of silence and she sits up to find her phone.
Like every other teenager, she has a phone, she boots up her phone, as the bright logo shines. As she goes into her messenger to see who would be interested to talk to her.
[Ugh I wish Roger wouldn't be so stubborn]
[That- that, urgh why is she being so bossy]
Of course, her neighbors were fighting, not only verbally, but mentally. Julie winces in annoyance as she also plugs in her earphones.
Her phone suddenly was pinging, she glanced at the dark-themed messenger. As she smiled at the name that was shown.
Right as she was going to answer her phone, Julie jumps as her phone starts ringing. Sighing, she picks it up. "Wassup"
"JULIE, YOU WOULDN'T BELIEVE WHAT HAPPE- sorry I mean you wouldn't believe what happened." Julie almost wanted to throw out her phone, as she rubs between her eyes. Well meet Celine, wow Julie has a friend.
"What's going on, I just got home" she answered, as Julie tries to concentrate on Celine's voice from her Aunt's thoughts in the kitchen and the loud neighbors.
"I met this dude after school ended, and let me tell you. HE WAS HUOOOT" Celine squeals loudly, as Julie plucks out her right earphone, as so to not break her eardrums. "A dude? Really Celine?" Julie answered as she walks around her room, why she was walking? She doesn't know as well.
"Well, the guy was tall, and- AND he has these very beautiful green eyes, NOT ONLY THAT HE WAS TOTALLY MY TYPE." Julie sighs at her friend's predicament. "'Lin this is so unlike you, what the hell," Julie muttered, as her friend whines in defense.
"It's not every day you meet a very handsome dude, as much as I hate dudes, my heart only belongs to non-living people," Celine said voice finally not that squealing fangirl. "Anyway why do I hear rustling"
"I'm walking"
"Walking?"
Julie thinks of it for a moment, before shrugging. "Walking in my room." Julie hears Celine going silent, "you're stupid." Julie groans as Celine giggled through her phone.
"Celine, you know we have a test tomorrow right." Again a moment of silence, when her phone was off and beeping. Celine had hung up on her.
"I'M HOME" Julie jumps at the booming voice coming from downstairs. Her Uncle, Rudy was home.
[I can't wait to tell them what happened, I got a day off, A DAY OFF]Julie smiled a little at her uncle's thoughts. Her uncle was an engineer, was probably as busy as Aunt Jude. Not everyday he gets to hang out with them.
Running downstairs, she was greeted with a tired smiling uncle. "'Sup kid" Her uncle waved, as Julie helps him up with his bag. She grunted at the weight of the bag. Damn heavy.
[Aw kid is helping out]
Julie rolled her eyes, as she heard her uncle's thoughts. First of all, she ain't cute. Second of all...there's nothing much to say to be honest.
Minutes passes by, as it was suddenly already dinner. Julie and both her aunt and uncle were already in the dining room, just eating and talking. Typical dinner is what Julie thought.
Stabbing her broccoli, she ate it as she listened to the adults talking and of course at the same time their thoughts slipping through.
"So are there any new cases?" Uncle Rudy asked as he drank a gulp of water. [Hope not] Julie agreed with her uncle. As much as she admired her aunt, she didn't want her aunt to leave her, or the very least her uncle.
[Ah what should I tell them]
"Well," Her aunt said, " there's this new case, the victim was killed around yesterday beside a construction site."
"Construction site?" Uncle Rudy frowned, Julie could hear his thoughts, worried and surprised.
"But the weird thing is the victim was not killed by like a knife or a blunt weapon, it looked to be claw marks." Her aunt explained as she ate her roast chicken.
[This was the third victim with claw marks]
Third?? This already happened before? Julie feeling weirded out to continue to eat her dinner in silence, while she drowns out the conversation, but the sound of their thoughts just goes in.
[Mhm should talk about something else]
[Is she going to be ok?]
Julie got up, as both her aunt and uncle stared at her. Feeling uncomfortable, she smiled and said "I'm done, for now, gotta study for a test tomorrow"
"Ok good luck!" Uncle Rudy patted her back, as her aunt nodded. She brings her plate to the kitchen and left it there, and heads back to her room.
[Well, it's only the two of us]
[More roast chicken for me]
Julie groans slightly at reading the thoughts of her aunt and uncle. As much as her ability gets her a lot of information, it bothers her that she is invading someone's privacy.
She sat on her chair and opened up her textbooks. The time to do what all students do on a daily basis. Study and procrastinate every five minutes. While doing so, she can't help but think about her aunt's case.
Julie always wonders, was there anybody else like her? Probably. But the chances of meeting them would be very low. She giggles at the thought of having an adventure like a mission to save the universe because finding out having superpowers would be a danger to society or something. It's like a typical novel or movie. But of course, this is reality, nothing fictional ever happens. Her situation? No explanation, but she's still living like any other ordinary person out there.
For the past hour, she tries to concentrate on her upcoming test, as she tries to ignore the random thoughts she's reading. If she was given a wish, she wished that this ability of hers has an off switch. Cause of how her sleeping schedule is going, coffee is not going to be able to help her anymore.
"Finally" she stretches out her limbs, as she smacks her book. Ready or not ready she didn't care anymore. But she was definitely ready to just pass out on her bed.
Laying on her bed, she drifts off thinking about what Celine had told her. A guy with green eyes, remind her of that one fictional character, what was he again? All she remembered was greek mythology from one of Celine's rants.
She goes back again, her aunt's case. Claw marks. Not normal of course, no ordinary human had claw marks to kill someone. Especially not with that short fingernails.
Julie felt her eyes slowly closing, it was getting heavy. She sluggishly got up, and turn off the lights. The darkness makes everything much more peaceful. She sighs as she cuddles onto her pillow. Yeah, tomorrow would be another day, another normal day.
[NOO JUDE'S FAVORITE MOVIE, JUDE NO, DON'T GO LIKING THAT MAN]
[Roger....we'll get back together tomorrow]
[Maybe I should break up with Donna]
[I can't wait for tomorrow's case, ooo is that a flying pig]
Julie slams her pillow to her face, to remind everybody again what her ability was. Mind reading without filtering, that means, even dreams.
Julie groans in despair, as she stayed up listening to her uncle's weird dreams, and the neighbors fighting. Yes, this was her daily evening, pure chaos.
