The alarm sound of the mobile phone on the table rang loudly. With her half-closed eyes, Annisa reached over to the small table next to the bed, trying to reach for her cell phone.
He squinted her eyes, still drowsy, figuring out what time it was. All of sudden, she jumped up from the bed when she realized it was already seven o'clock in the morning.
"Oops, I'm overslept. I hope I do not miss the tour today."
She suddenly grabbed a towel in a panic way and rushed into the minimalist yet cozy hotel bathroom
The atmosphere of the restaurant at La Luna hotel was already crowded at that morning. The noise rushed from some groups of tourist sitting at their table. The sounds of spoons and forks clinked against the plate.
Annisa turned her head here and there looking for friends of her group tour from Indonesia. She saw Ella, a friend she had just met on a tour of Mexico, waving her arms at her, pointing at the remaining empty chair next to her.
"Good morning sleeping beauty," said Ella in broad smile and beaming face.
"Come on, have your breakfast, our tour will be leaving soon."
The entourage of Venus Tour and Travel with red-and-white flag looked get off the bus and entered a tourism site located on the Yukatan Peninsula.
"Ladies and gentlemen, we will immediately enter the historic area of the Chichen Itza Pyramid, a Mayan civilization site in Mexico, built in the 800th century BC, is one of the seven new wonders of the world," the tour guide explained loudly.
"Please keep bringing up the rear of the group to avoid the undesirable things. And as always, keep your valuable belongings from pickpockets or other bad guys."
Ella grabbed Annisa's hand and invited her to take pictures in front of El Castillo, the palace located in the center of the complex and the most dominant object. Nearby, there was a field with pillars and square walls.
Annisa held the camera and took a picture of Ella enjoying the poses in front of the palace, unconcerned that a pair of eyes were watching them.
Abruptly, a little boy in a black shirt and brown shorts with bare barefoot grabbed a pink purse poking out of Annisa's backpack. It looked she forgot to rezip while taking the camera out.
"Watch out, Nisa!" Ella shouted. Her face was startled and pale.
But the little boy managed to run Annisa's purse. Without further thinking, Annisa ran to chase, but the little boy ran too fast toward the flower garden and she lost his tracks instantly.
"How, Nisa?" Asked Ella while panting as she ran after her from behind.
Annisa shook her head, looked limp but furious.
"I couldn't catch him, Ella. The pickpocket ran very fast. It was my fault for neglecting to take care of my bag. Arrgggggghhhhh!"
Ella invited Annisa to sit on a wooden bench in the flower garden not far from there.
"Try to check again, Nisa. Besides your wallet, is there anything else missing? Do you remember what you put in your wallet?"
Annisa immediately checked the contents of his bag carefully. Her hands were still shaking violently duet to either stifling anger or feeling tired of running. Sweat poured profusely from his forehead.
"I think it's just my purse and the Peso coins of changes I bought drink some time ago. Fortunately, I did not put my passport and pocket money in that purse. But my identity card and family picture are there, Ella."
Ella sighed her breath with relief and tried to calm Annisa's heart down.
"Never mind, Nisa. The importance is that your passport and money aren't lost. Your identity card and family picture can be made on your way back to Denpasar."
Annisa smiled wryly, trying to laugh a little, a very forced laugh.
"Yes, you are right, Ella. I'm still lucky this time."
Ella stood up and lent her hand to Annisa.
"Let's rejoin our tour group. For sure, they've been waiting for us outside. Let's not make them worry about this."
Annisa welcomed Ella's hand without enthusiasm. They both looked tired to walk after chasing the pickpocket.
Dave walked down the path of the Reforma that afternoon accompanied by the Nico which was faithful accompanying him.
Dave's mind raged of thinking about one thing, something that had been bothering him lately. His forehead creased hard, he sighed again and again, agitated and troubled. He wiped his wet hands into the pocket of his jeans for several times.
Nico was aware of Dave's behavior but he was not in the mood to ask. He didn't want to make his best friend more frantic by asking some questions, at least not for the time being.
Abruptly, Dave collided with a small child who seemed to come from the alley without he knew. Bang!
"Ouch!" Shouted the boy while holding his legs and rubbing his scuffed knees.
"Are you all right, Kid?" Dave said worriedly.
"I'm sorry I walked without looking at the road."
Then, He gave his hand to help the little boy stand up.
The boy grinned wryly at his face. But he could still smile and say "I'm okay, brother. Thank you."
And then, the boy was gone without saying anything else.
Nico laughed at Dave intentionally.
"That's why you should look around, Dave."
Dave stuck his tongue out to Nico.
"Huh, instead of helping, you're laughing," Dave said.
Dave swiftly fell silent and noticed something pink that he was very interested in. He leaned over and picked up the stuff that turned out to be a woman's purse.
"It must belong to that little boy which fell by the time of the collision." Dave muttered.
He looked at the little boy walking. That little boy was not seen throughout the reach of the eye.
"What's that, Dave?" Nico asked.
Dave opened the purse and looked at what was inside. There was no money left there. There were only family pictures of father, mother, daughter and son.
He again rummaged the purse contents hoping to find something else. Suddenly, Dave felt his heart pounding, his mouth was wide open without realizing it. He recognized the female figure in a different photo.
A close-up photo of an angel, the savior of his soul, beautiful and graceful face that had been decorating his dreams, as if she was smiling very sweetly at him.
Her chest swelled, full of exuberant excitement, as if he wanted to jump as high as she could, flew up as far as he could, for remembering the face of the dream girl he had been longing for.
Nico was busy shaking Dave's hand, trying to ask what the hell happened, he ignored it.
Dave's smile was enormous, making his handsome face much more captivating and shining.
Dave showed close-up photo to Nico.
"Look at this, Nico. She is the beautiful girl who helped me at that time. Finally, I found what I was looking for."
Nico gasped in disbelief. His eyes bulged and his mouth gaped, as if he did not believe in Dave's words.
"Are you sure, Dave? You're not dreaming, are you?" Asked Nico making sure.
"I'm sure of it, Nico. One hundred percent sure that this is the girl who saved me and took me to the hospital at that time."
At that moment, Nico grabbed the pink purse from Dave's hand.
"What are you waiting for, Dave? Let's find the girl's address."
Nico found the girl's identity card.
"Hmm ... Her name is Annisa. But ... the news is not quite good for you, Dave ..." Nico suddenly stopped his conversation.
"What ... Why ... What's up, Nico?" Dave grabbed the ID from Nico's hand.
Dave's face immediately looked sad.
"Oh ... she's apparently a tourist from Indonesia. No wonder if our family network cannot find her so far."
Nico patted Dave on the shoulder. "Whatsoever, we should still thank to the girl, shouldn't we?" Nico warned.
"You're right, Nico," Dave nodded.
"Here is a piece of paper written on it, Hotel La Luna, Florencia Street. Hmm ... The girl's writing is good, as pretty as herself."
"Hey ... The hotel is not far from here. Only a few blocks away. Let's go there now, Nico."
Dave whistled happily, humming his current bloomy mood.
Hotel La Luna, Florencia Street, Mexico City.
The hotel reception located in the lobby looked crowded by people queuing up.
Dave seemed impatient to join the queue. Finally, his turn arrived.
"Can we help you, Sir ... Sorry with whom I speak?" The young male receptionist of about twenties greeted him pleasantly.
Dave smiled and showed Annisa's identity card and photo to the hotel receptionist.
"I'm Dave. Can you tell us where we can find this girl? We found her purse and everything within and we intend to return it to her."
The receptionist picked up the identity card Dave handed over and typed something on the computer.
"All right, Mr. Dave. Miss Annisa had previously stayed at this hotel for some time. But unfortunately, ... this beautiful lady already checked out this morning and returned to her home country through the flight this afternoon at 12.00, sir."
Dave widened his eyes and shouted, "What ...! Don't you see the wrong info? Try to recheck on the computer, maybe there was a typo or whatever!"
Almost all hotel guests at Hotel La Luna looked at and glanced over Dave curiously.
"Ssst Dave, speak slowly, do not shout out. Look! Everyone is looking at us now," Nico tried to calm his friend.
"It is correct, Mr. Dave, I have checked on our computer. Miss Annisa checked out this morning, the room has been filled by our other guests."
"And she has departed with the Venus Tur and Travel entourage to her home country on a scheduled flight this afternoon," the receptionist reiterated.
Unexpectedly, Dave felt his knees limp, his eyes suddenly saw stars, feeling as if his whole spirit was lost swallowed by the earth, nothing left. Empty.
"Have you thought carefully about your decision, Son?" Asked Mr. Edward to his son.
He examined the look on Dave's face who at that moment looked at him expectantly.
"My intention is complete, Dad. My own father who told me that we as the lineage of Moreno must fulfill the promise we have previously vowed. I had promised myself since I was saved by the girl that I would express my infinite gratitude for saving my soul. I really owe her, Dad. "
Edward moved his chair closer to his son, trying to persuade Dave to abort his intention. The air-conditioned room in Mr. Edward's office used to be cold, but at the moment, it didn't feel cold for both sides. Black leather couches that are actually soft and expensive became uncomfortable for them to sit on them.
"Let's reconsider your intention to find the girl out of her country, Dave. Indonesia is very far from Mexico. You have never been there before. Moreover, our families also do not have any connection network and with anyone there. Daddy does not want anything we do not want that will happen to you while you're there, Son."
Dave smiled and looked at Mr. Edward's brown eyebrow solemnly.
"You do not have to be worried. Nico will accompany me during my search there. You know how Nico has been keeping me well all the time."
Edward stood up and walked away from Dave toward the window. He drew back the curtains slightly with his right hand. He pretended to observe the beauty of the garden in front of it.
"Well, if you still insist on going to Indonesia to find her. But before you do, there's something Daddy want to tell you, the secret about our family."
Dave was startled. "Secrets? What's the secret, Dad?"
Edward took a deep breath before beginning his story.
"Before you were born, the Moreno family was very close and got in touch with the Romero family, well-known as Le Coyote."
Dave almost jumped out of his seat.
"Le Coyote, the famous mafia family, Dad?"
Edward nodded slowly, almost imperceptibly.
"That's correct, Son. Le Coyote is a famous mafia family in mainland Mexico, especially in Mexico City. Our family used to be known as El Lobo, The Wolves. The Le Coyote and El Lobo families once rallied the power of mafia families and together we took control of all aspects of business and social life in Mexico City. This power merger has been going on for generations since your great-grandfather, Dave."
Dave's eyes widened, unable to believe his hearing.
"So, Dad says that our family has been a mafia family?"
Edward ignored his son's question and then continued his story.
"But, since Daddy met your mother and gave you born, Daddy's dearest son, my Daddy managed to gradually bring our family out of the black world, Dave. I love you and your mother so much. So, starting at that moment, Daddy determined to leave them all for the sake of you and gradually built the business legally, as you can see right now, the hotel chain business we run all along, Son."
Edward tried to convince Dave who at that moment was looking at him doubtfully. "The business we are running now is purely a legal enterprise of our family without any slightest interference from our former Mafia family affairs. Daddy tries to keep it from you because Daddy is very worried about your safety, and sends you to school in the United States since you were an early kid. So, they can do nothing that can hurt you."
Dave thought hard, there was something quite disturbing in his mind.
"So, were the people beating me the people of El Coyote, Dad?"
Edward turned his face away from Dave. His face looked worried.
"Everything Dad did in the past, leaving the black mafia's world, has long consequences, even until today. Right on your birthday some time ago, they tried to kidnap you in order Daddy want to join them again. They see our hotel business chains growing very rapidly. And it would be very beneficial for them if Daddy reunited the power of the El Lobo and Le Coyote families. Their hotel business chains will grow stronger and better if they are combined with what our family owns right now, Dave."
Dave became silent. He imagined returning to a bleak moment when he felt that something very hard hit his head from behind.
At glance, he faintly remembered the face of the beautiful girl, Annisa, helping him.
Afterwards, he remembered the time he spent all the time lying weak in the hospital due to the attack.
"How can you be sure that they're responsible for that, Dad?" Dave asked with a curious look on his face.
"Our family had been in the mafia world for a long time, Dave. It's not hard for us to find out who did it. But, we do not want to involve the authorities, in this case the police, because we put your safety first. Furthermore, the Moreno family has put these things to right."
Dave did not understand the direction of his father's conversation.
"What do you mean?"
Edward dismissed Dave's question immediately.
"Never mind, Son. You do not need to know about it. We'd better get back to focus on our previous conversations."
Dave walked over to his father. "I stick at my position, Father. I'm going to go to Indonesia and look for Annisa. I hope you support my decision."
"All right, Dave, if you stick at your intention. Daddy will grant your request, but on one condition."
Dave listened to Mr. Edward's words carefully.
"What's that, Dad?" Dave said.
"Whatever results you will get there, you've got to get back here before our golden wedding anniversary. Your father and mother plan to make a big celebration for that. We'll also announce your engagement plan with Adella, the heir daughter of Mr. Hierra's family business, if everything goes as planned," told Mr. Edward to his son.
Dave seemed to want to say something to his father. There were things that he quite disagreed seemingly. But after reconsidered, he should obey the words of his father.
In fact, I do not really like this engagement plan, but instead of Daddy not giving me permission to go to Indonesia looking for Annisa, I'd better pretend to follow his plans for now. For the next steps, I will think about it later on while in Indonesia, Dave thought to himself, calming down.
"Well, Dad. I'll manage to back here before Daddy and Mom's golden marriage anniversary. It means I have 6 months from now to find Annisa in Indonesia. And I will be back here before New Year's Eve."
His father smiled with relief.
"Good then, Son. It means we both agree with it. Hmm, one more thing you need to remember as long as you are in Indonesia. You should always be careful there, though Nico will always be around to look after you, but you have to keep your identity very secretive. Don't let anyone know about you being there, who you really are, and other important things."
"Even though you're far away, we're afraid the Le Coyote group will get a pretty big chance to hurt you and we can do nothing to help you out of here. Son, mark my words."
Dave nodded his head. Gazed into his father's brown eyes steadily, trying to convince his father with his earnest sincerity.
"Well, Dad. I'll always keep that in mind and I'll stay alert wherever I am. Dad doesn't need to be worried. I can keep myself well because I am a Moreno. The descendants of El Lobo are very famous for their determination and skill. Isn't it like, Dad?"
Edward smiled in affirmation.
"I'm glad to hear that, Dave. Don't forget to back here before the celebration party. There will be many things we need to prepare when you return. Good luck with your quest mission."
Edward rubbed his son's head gently and lovingly. He felt lucky to have a son as Dave.
