Chapter 6- The Chaser Event

I woke up startled. The whole night, I've been thinking about my brother.

How did we get separated? Why did my father never tell me about my brother? These were just the few questions that crossed my mind.

I stood up and had a quick shower. After, I checked on my friends. Apparently, no one bothered to wake me up because no one was in their rooms. I figured that they had already headed to the event today. I checked the time.

"WHAT THE HECK?!", I said. The clock said that it was 11:48. "The Chaser event is starting soon!"

I cursed, grabbed a snack to eat, and went to the assembly hall.

When I went into the shadows, I got a strange feeling. I felt more powerful, the darkness was more drawn to me. I realized that the Power Dampening Injection (PDI) has wear off.

     I was excited to find out what new skills I have and how powerful I am now. I was planning on figuring out during the Chaser Event.

     I saw my friends in their seats. They saved a spot for me and I sat down.

     "Did you have a nice sleep", Gabbie said, trying not to laugh.

     I ignored her and paid attention to what's happening on stage. The principal announced that the first trial will be taken on school grounds. He told us that we will go to the arena.

     Everyone who will be participating, which was about 20 people, went down to the arena, followed by the spectators.

     When we got in, there was a maze, and at the end of the maze was a gem.

     I've heard of these before, once touched, your ability will be greatly enhanced, making it more powerful. The effects depend on the colour of the gemstone.

     White was the weakest, then blue, purple, and the last one was golden.

     I couldn't believe that the faculty was actually going to give the students a legendary gemstone.

     "I believe that most of you already know what that is. It is a gemstone that can make abilities grow stronger beyond everyone's imagination. One of the twenty will be achieving that", Alastair said, "but beware contestants, there are dangerous summons in the maze that you will need to overcome to get to your end goal.

     We heard a monstrous roar from the maze.

     "If you ever need any medical help, you must send up a flare", a medic said. He gave all of us a flare each.

     We all went into a different part of the maze, filled with hope and fear.

     I was confident though because I could just teleport.

     Before we got in, we were given a bracelet to track where we are in case we got injured.

     "You may not use your powers but you may use your weapons", one of the teachers said.

     "Ah right, I forgot that bit, you may not use your powers once in the maze", Alastair said.

     Suddenly, the faces of the competitors turned grim, like they just signed their death warrants.

     I grabbed my daggers, and went into the maze.

     IT WAS HORRIFYING! Once we got in, the maze filled with mist or fog and we could barely see. We heard the roads of the summons in the maze.

     I heard a scream and the first flare went up. The first contender was off the event. I heard an announcement.

     "Barry Smith is out", A voice from the speaker said.

     I ran, hoping to finish the maze faster, but it didn't help, I didn't know where to go.

     Suddenly, the ground shook around me. I looked up, and on the walls of the maze was a spider. It was humongous! I swear it could make a bear cry by just showing it's face.

     I ran, but it creepily marched on the walls, following me. I wished that this nightmare could just end. I was so close to firing the flare gun when I finally found the courage to face the arachnid.

     I grabbed my daggers, and threw it. It sliced two of its legs and it stumbled. It roared in pain and anguish, leaving me time to escape.

     I ran and never looked back. I could see the golden aura of the gemstone. It still seemed like it was far away.

     I heard footsteps running towards me. Something covered my eyes and I punched behind me.

     I heard a familiar groan and I looked behind me.

     "What was that for?", Adrian said, holding his gut.

     "Hey man, you should've woken me up", I replied.

     We laughed, I was finally not afraid knowing that my friend was here.

     "Wanna work together for now?", he asked.

     I nodded and we shook hands. Another announcement has been made.

     "Six more contestants are out, leaving 13 people left."

     I was content with this announcement.

     "Hey, wanna rest and take turns looking out?"

     "Yeah, sure man, thanks", I said.

     It's been 30 minutes and Adrian woke me up. He told me that it was my turn.

     At first, I was confused, then I remembered that we were in the maze, doing the chaser event.

     "Alright, how many contestants are left?", I asked.

     "There's eight left."

     "We got this." I told him to rest and I looked out.

     A few minutes later, another flare went up in the sky, followed by an announcement.

     I felt the ground shake again. I woke Adrian up and told him that a giant spider was coming for us.

     We ran towards the golden aura of the gemstone. It looks like it's been a few hours since the event started.

     We finally stopped to rest.

     "Oh my goodness, it seems like I can never catch a break", Adrian told me. He laughed and  stood against the wall.

     I looked at the golden aura.

     "We must be close", I said.

     Then I heard a grunt, I looked behind and I saw Adrian.

     He smiled, blood flowing out of his mouth. He looked at his chest, a spider leg impaling him.

     "He caught me by surprise", he said.

     The leg flung him and he hit the wall. I saw my friend, he wasn't moving on the ground. Anger and rage flowed through me. All I could think about was killing the spider.

     I held my daggers and faced the spider. Without using my powers, I climbed on top of it, slashing and slashing over again.

     A pale blue colour gushed out of its body. It's blood all over my clothes.

     It dropped on the ground, dead. I knelt beside Adrian and I fired his flare gun.

     "You win this for me", he said slowly and quietly.

     Suddenly, someone teleported to his body. I saw that it was the medic.

     She saw the fear in my eyes and told me that it was going to be all right. She told me that he wasn't dead.

     She teleported back, carrying Adrian.

     "Don't worry buddy, I'll win this for you", I muttered.

     An announcement said that there are only three people left trying to get the gemstone. I was relieved when I learned that Adrian wasn't dead.

     I ran, I heard another roar. It was now between me and two other people. I know that we were all close to the gemstone.

     I ran a bit faster. I finally made it to the end. It looked like I was the only one there. I was about to walk up to the gemstone when a dragon like creature pounced on me.

     I struggled to free myself, but I got it done. Fire came out from its mouth and I dodged.

     That could've killed me if I wasn't trained.

     I threw my daggers and with one slice, it was defeated.

     I went up to the gemstone and when I touched it, I felt a tingling sensation running through my body.

     It felt like it was changing me. I heard a whisper in my ear.

     "You are the Shadow Lord."
