Chapter 35 - The Test?

Reya sat silently for a while. She turned back to him and whispered, "So what do you think is their purpose here?"

Clive shrugged. "I don't know. You said you know subject one. Did she tell you anything?" he said.

Reya tried her best to remember her conversation with her. At first when she asked if a human can be healed, the goddess said she did not have the power. But later she said something about a test of righteousness.

"She said something along the lines of a test," she said with her brows furrowed.

Clive snapped his head towards her. He rushed over to the table and started flipping through something.

"Do you know something else?" she whispered.

"I think I do. They are here to test us," he said with a large smirk.

She gave him a wooden stare. "You are repeating exactly what I said," she said with a huff.

"No.. no look." He showed her another paper. It was filled with codes that she could not understand.

She raised her eyebrows and gave him a stare.

He sighed and said, "it's a message they sent through the space station. It said something along the lines of lineages and successors," he said.

"So they are here to choose successors," she said with her eyes narrowed.

"Yes," he said with a jubilant smirk.

"Really?" she raised her eyebrows sceptically.

"Yes, really," he said again cheerfully.

She sighed and sat down. "It's too much. It's harder to believe already. Why would they destroy the world and choose successors themselves?" she sighed.

He squatted next to her and said, "Maybe to test our resilience and goodwill," he said as a matter of fact.

"What?"

"See, this is the population that survived the plague." He said pointing to the red dots long the digital map.

All of them were spread across the map, but the safety bunkers were completely bare of humans.

"So you are saying that they are testing our character," she whispered.

"YES! Think about it. As far as I heard from Mark you and your mother always helped the people in need and look you have a superpower. And even came in contact with an alien," he said with a huge smirk.

Reya really didn't like the direction their discussion was going. She knew that Clive was a good man, but when scientist are too into their research, they sometimes end up doing cruel things in the name of good.

She sighed and shook her head. "I don't think so," she whispered.

"But I think so," he said in a resolute tone. "You were chosen because you are righteous," he said, as if it was matter of fact.

Reya shook her head again. It was too good to be true, so she helped a few refuges and got a super power in return. There must be a downfall to this. But she was yet to find out.

"I don't care about my powers... lets...lets not talk about it," she said, holding her aching forehead.

Clive nodded and stood up. "sad, I wish I had any blood or tissue samples of these alien creatures," he mumbled and slouched on the sofa.

Her ears perked up at this. "What can you find with that?"

"I can tell if your mutation is related to them or not. And if it's a decease, I can find a way to cure it," he said and went back to his telescope.

Reya's hand reached to her pocket. She clenched the blood stained tissue in her hand. 'Should I give it or not? I...I really don't know what to do,' she thought.

Her thoughts were conflicted. She didn't know the extent of her power. She knew she was fast, but there must be a downside to her body.

"Hey, can you do a full body check on me," she said with determination.

Clive gazed at her and nodded. He took her to a room which had all the medical equipment's. "I'll take you X-ray and ct-scan. I already have your blood sample, and tissue sample. About urine...." he gazed at her with a professional look.

Reya sighed and nodded. "Yes, fine,"

"Good change into this," he gave her a cotton gown.

She changed into it fast and rushed out. Soon he took her X-rays and ct-scans, and then he took her urine sample.

"You have to give me another blood and urine sample before eating," he said slowly.

"For now, let's check your scans," he said and gazed at the scans in his hands. His eye crunched up, gazing at them.

"What? What's wrong?" she whispered.

He gazed at her with pity.

"Reya.. Your organs look like they are being over strained. Look here, your lugs looks very inflated. I think it's the side effect of your speed," he said with a forlorn tone.

"Your power is a ticking time bomb in your body,"
