"I always meant to ask you... Aiden accused you of something that night at the dance. What was that? Why was he acting like you betrayed him?"

Chase sighed. "We were best friends, Kate. I don't think I ever told you… neither of us trusted anyone as much as we trusted each other. It's why I followed him into the Shades. I always had concerns. But, I didn't want to lose him. He was a brother to me."

I was stunned. I'd known they were close, but we'd never really talked about what that had looked like. "So what happened?"

"When he set that fire…" Chase shook his head. "I was so scared of him, Kate. You should have seen him the next day—he was pale and shaky and I knew he was hating himself. But he just gave in to this euphoria. Like… like he got high on having hurt them.
