The Last Good Day for a Long Time

8/8/4999

Jimmy was in yet another boring meeting at the committee building when Jessica walked in. He smiled knowing that things were about to get good. She walked into the room and flopped down into an empty chair.

"I get that I am still under orders to rest because of all the interruptions making me have to start the damn 3 day clock again," Jessica said whining a little bit that on day three she had been informed that day one hadn't counted because she had teleport and day two hadn't counted because she had gotten caught sneaking into M.U.G. she had just wanted to look over the designs she had been in the middle of and maybe tweak one or two things. "But that doesn't mean I can't take someone out for ice cream."

It was now 5 days after she had been caught up in work frenize and she tired of being on orders to rest the worms were going to hatch today it was a time sensitive issue introducing the genetic splicing and she had had to let Dzvezda handle it. She of course paid her but that wasn't the point she really had wanted to do it herself. In order to help Jessica out she had taken today as a day of rest from the committee, this was one of the reasons Jimmy was so bored. He had grown quite fond of the woman but made some headway into making friends with the other members of the committee.

"Sorry, but I really am to busy," Zerek replied. Jimmy laughed, it was clear she had been talking to him.

"I am not lets gooo," Jimmy said holding the o until he was out the front door as a laughing Jessica followed him a few steps behind. Once outside he waited for her and she looked at him for a second and then asked a question he never thought anyone would ask him.

"Do you want to figure it out for yourself or do you want me to teach you how to make your own air wings?," Jessica asked looking a bit naughty. There is nothing in the rules against teaching people things she thought.

Jimmy almost jumped out of his skin he nearly had it on his own a few times but something wasn't adding up. He was standing next to the one person on Karth who could actually help him finish it!

"I would love your help," Jimmy said as they started walking down the street to find an ice cream vendor, "I think I am just this side of unlocking it. I can't figure out where I am going wrong."

"Well," Jessica said tilting her head, "Have you watch video of me when I do it?"

"Dozens of times," Jimmy replied excitedly.

Jessica looked at him confused if he had observed her with his intellect he should be able to take flight right now. Maybe he forgot, she thought. Jessica looked at him and said, "360 3D render."

Jimmy smacked himself on the forehead, "How did I miss that!" He stopped walking for a second and closed his eyes. He took all the images of Jessica flying from their 2D angles and rendered a 3D version in his head. He saw what he had been missing and cast the spell one more time. When he opened his eyes again. Jessica was looking up at him. His phone beeped. He had received a title although it wasn't unique because Jessica had already done it he didn't care. He could fly now. A passerby who knew the Strongwells texted her mother that she had used magic. Her phone rang.

"Hi Mom! Guess what," Jessica said answer the phone.

"Are you using your magic to give Jimmy air wings?," Her mother calmly asked.

"No, I am not," Jessica replied pouting that the surprise had been spoiled.

"I have 3 differnt video clips of that boy flying just above your head young lady, do you want to try again?," her mother said a little irritated.

"Mom, he is flying just above my head AND I am not giving him air wings," Jessica said with a smirk.

"If you aren't giving him... wait are you saying he figured it out?!?," Mrs Strongwell was in shock but he is such a little poo poo head she thought.

"Gotta go mom we are going to get ice cream, love you bye," Jessica said and hung up. She wished she could join him on his first flight but alas no using her magic. Jimmy saw a slight frown on her face and his broke out into a wicked smile.

"You want me to do it?," He asked her.

"Do you think that you can?," Jessica asked her eyes lighting up.

"Sure give me a second," he closed his eyes again and observed her casting the spell on others in the 3D rendered space, "is by weight or height?," he mumbled, '' Oh, of course!"

He cast the spell and when he opened his eyes Jessica was flying next to him. They both decided fuck ice cream this is better and began to fly around the city playing tag. Jessica spotted Amarilla walking down a street and flew above her head. She flipped herself upside down and brought herself face to face with the young girl.

"BOO," She said a smile on her lips. Amarilla was a bit started but just started laughing. She saw Jimmy flying above Jessica about to grab her feet.

"Look out," She said pointing up. Jessica looked at Jimmy made the T for timeout motion with her hands.

"Wanna come play tag with us?," Jessica asked her the gold fleck in her eyes dancing.

"I would but I still haven't quite gotten the spell right," Amarilla said sounding a little frustrated.

Jessica made a sound that in the language of her mind meant the same thing she had said to Jimmy a little while ago and Amarilla closed her eyes for a second and took flight.

"Thanks for the tip," Amarilla said chasing after Jimmy. Jessica turned herself upright realizing what had just happened. She was puzzled as to why the girl had not called her and then realized she had been planning to see her soon and it must have gotten forgotten in the fray of the day as they say. She recorded her voice and made a quick note to double check if anyone else had not contacted her when she had slipped and set it to remind her when she was alone.

The three of them soon grew tired of playing tag.

"Where should we go next?," Amarilla asked them.

"Maybe we should go get ice cream like I planned," Jessica suggested. They both looked at Jimmy who had a wicked grin on his face. Oh, this is gonna be good, Jessica thought.

"You know what else can fly besides us and the Fae," Jimmy said toyingly. Jessica's eyes opened wider.

"I like the way you think kiddo," She called already headed for the telepad. Amarilla who had not yet met the dragon was a little confused. Jimmy started off after Jessica pausing for second to wave to Amarilla to follow. When they landed by the telepad Jessica pulled out her phone and called Harmon.

"Hey, sweety, could, I talk ,to you, later," Harmon said answering the phone his voice being interrupted by jolting.

"But I wanna play with my namesake! I was calling to ask if it would be ok," Jessica said whining only a little.

"For the love of all that is holy yes. We are at Arholo's Families milkworm farm, come quickly," Harmon said dropping the phone and she could hear him calling out, "Don't you bite that worm. Don't you do it."

Jessica chuckled and hung up the phone, "Looks like we are going to the Star contenant."

"Are we really gonna go play with the new dragon," Amarilla asked. She was slowly getting used to the way things worked when you were friends with Jessica Strongwell. Jimmy ported off first and Jessica frowned.

"What's wrong?," Amarilla asked. Then she gave her forehead two sharp taps on the side. She hadn't talked to Jessica sooner because of the doctor's orders, " Don't worry I got you." Amarilla teleport herself and Jessica to the Star contenant.

"Jimmy, you really are a little shit," Jessica called out after him. He had realized what he did when he arrived but figured it would be ok.

"Sorry, I got excited," He called back, "Which way?"

Jessica lead them above the trees directly to the mud and brick houses of Arholo's village and landed just outside of it. Jimmy and Amarilla landed next to her. Looking around they saw no sign of the dragon and where about to ask when Jessica started speaking.

"Do not fly inside this village unless it is life or death," She told them firmly.

"Why not?," Jimmy asked confused.

"The twin Fae who left Karth to go into space flew off from within its boundaries, promising to return one day. The people here watch the sky carefully and you do not want to be the one to give them a moment of false hope," Jessica said in a way that invited no further questions. She had not made that mistake not even once she had been friends with Arholo and his clan from birth and although they had once lived in her community this was still their home. She was hopeful that one day Arholo would meet the Fae of his clan.

They walked into the village that had been until the Blackout completely technology free aside from holo projectors installed so P.A.I.L. could visit. Since the Blackout, only Arholo had magic and they had been forced to switch. The newly installed generators look grossly out of place against the gentle background of brown huts with moss roofs. Jessica wanted to reach out with her magic and just adjust a holo projectors program. Before she started too, the two though the two behind her beat her to it.

"OMG that is so wrong looking!," Amarilla scoffed.

"It isn't even that hard to fix," Jimmy said. The two of them joined hands and brainstormed in a quiet whisper what they should do. Jessica tilted her head and watched the exchange.

When they pulled apart they accessed the holoprogram and working together created a large tree with a door to access the generators. They hid vents in the tops of the branches. The tree itself looked like a red wood. It was not the same as the trees that were natural here but it did need to stand out just a little to remind people why it was there. A passing dwarf seeing the children casting spells had stopped to watch. He approved of what they were doing and walked over to them.

"If you are gonna do it could you add a little something for me?," He asked pulling a photo out of his everbag. He had been gifted the hacking device by Arholo. Who had used his portion of the quest rewards for the past 2 years to help out the people of his village in anyway he could. The first thing he had paid for the generators not because his people couldn't afford it but because they were so opposed to its installation. The kids leaned over and looked at the photo of twin girls standing back to back smiling there gold eyes telling the children these were the Fae Jessica had mentioned. Their other clue was each of them had a single wing unfurled and they were holding them together above their heads to shape a heart. Without needing to talk it over they stared at the photo and muttered spells to carve the image into the door. They then added gold flakes onto the eyes of the carving. Underneath, the wrote in dwarfish 'Until we see you again'. The man read the little something extra the children had added and hugged them both tightly around the neck.

"Thank you, dear ones," he handed them each an almost apple from his bag and walked off.

"Cool free food," Jimmy said taking a bite of his.

"It is called a gift you weirdo," Amarilla teased him. Jessica watched as these two were fast becoming lifelong friends and it made her a little sad. She really wanted to fix things with Peter but he wasn't answering anyone.

She lead them through the village until they came across a very frazzled and tired looking Harmon. The light yellow floor length gown he was wearing was covered in mud and had a tear in the side. His hair was a tangled mess flapping around in the breeze. He stopped chasing the baby dragon and glared at Jessica.

"YOU," He pointed at her, " YOU DID THIS TO ME!"

Jessica couldn't help herself, she busted up laughing. She laughed so hard her sides hurt and she fell to the ground. She rolled on the soft dirt street until the fit subsided.

"Harmon, did you hit your head recently?," She asked in mock concern.

"No, but I am about to hit yours with a rock," He threatened. Her laughing had not helped matters.

"I thought you of all people would have figured it out by now," Jessica replied standing up and brushing herself off.

"Figured what out?," Harmon asked placing one hand on hip and swatting the hair out of his face with the other.

"Honey, just sing," Jessica said smiling. Harmon stared at her for a second processing what she had just said. His cheeks turned a glowing bright pink from embarrassment.

He sang out, "Little dragon you fly so high and so fast could you please take a rest."

As Harmon free versed the song the dragon flew back to him and landed on the ground by his feet. She could have pointed it out, then again she probably thought I would just do it naturally she didn't know I wouldn't have the brain power from lack of sleep. Harmon's train of thought got interrupted by a crowd brushing past him. They were going to the tree the kids had made. The news had quickly spread and they were each taking a turn touching the carving. The kids did really nice work and the attention to detail was stunning.

Harmon said, "I am going home to nap. I have to teach a class to a group of kinders in 4 hours you can play with the dragon until I wake up and if you want a refresher course in history you can sit in." He stormed away. After Jessica went inside for a bit to hug Arholo's parents and thank his father for the fine meal the other day. Then she joined the kids and the dragon where they had landed when they arrived here.

Jessica and the kids took the dragon far from the village and flew around with it for a couple of hours. Jimmy felt his magic starting fade and as he opened his mouth to warn Jessica he felt her adding her own magic to the spell. She didn't seem to be aware of it though. He landed suddenly. Jessica and Amarilla looked at eachother and the dragon and then down at Jimmy. They shrugged and landed beside him.

"Jessica, do you know what you just did?," He asked her watching her carefully.

"We were having a good time and you landed for no reason, so no I don't," Jessica replied as Amarilla spotted a round rock and changed its shape in a hexagon sphere. She tossed it up and the dragon caught.

"My magic was running out and you added to it," Jimmy told her. Jessica was surprised to hear this she didn't try to deny it, she believed in his assessment.

"Ok, wait does that mean…." Jessica trailed off and pulled out her phone. She pulled up her achievements, "Find all accidental magic." The list was huge. It was a subcategory under her second unique title and she had never thought to look at it again. She turned the screen to him. He had looked at her achievement lists hundreds of times but finding a specific thing you were looking for was difficult without key word phrases. She had literally millions of them.

"Any way the magic is already spent so let's keep playing," Jessica said choosing to shrug this off for now.

They flew closer to the ground tossing the rock toy for the dragon and worked their way to the telepad slowly arriving almost exactly at the four hour time limit and boom there was Harmon arriving. This time in a sparkling silver and sequence knee length dress.

"I know it is rude to ask," Jimmy started.

"But why do you like dresses so much?," Amarilla finished.

Jessica and Harmon looked at each other.

"I thought you guys knew who the other 100 are?," Jessica asked puzzled at their question.

"What does that have to do with," Jimmy was asking but Amarilla cut him off.

"Are they your sister's?," Amarilla interrupted to ask.

"It started off that way when we were younger I would sometimes borrow things. When we got separated because of assignments for the Blackout I started wearing them more. To be honest these days she raids my closest more than I do hers," Harmon answered smiling, "Honestly, though Arholo never gets these questions about his quilt." Harmon added shaking his head.

They elected to go to his speech. Just because you already know something doesn't mean learning how someone new would teach is going to make you unlearn it. All knowledge can serve a purpose after all and gaining the right information at the right time is something the people of Karth were prone to do.
