Your smile

I slowly wake up to the sound of dripping water. I open my eyes and jump up, seeing a pool of water on the floor, I cough almost choking. My clothes soaked, "Fuck. It happened again…"

I turn off the water tap and a searing pain strikes through my body as I cough nonstop, "I need to clean up and take a shower", I say to myself while consistently coughing in between words.

The coughing slowly stops, I clean up, barely being able to move.

I finish cleaning and taking a shower. An urging pain goes through my head as I remember what happened yesterday, "Oh, yeah. I was on the phone with Celia and-"

I say whilst I lose balance and fall over, bruising my arm against the table. I try to stand up and get some water, "I'm alright, I got this."

I let out a heavy sigh and try to remember the conversation I had with Celia yesterday. I check my clock and it shows ten o'clock, "I have some time left."

I make some delicious pancakes with syrup over it, again i totally didn't almost burn down the house. Moments later, I finish my meal and doubtfully think to myself, "I should call her, shouldn't I?"

I pick up my phone and ring her, "Hey! It's Celia."

I remember the plans I made with her yesterday, "Hey! Uhm, it's me, Rozale. Sorry for hanging up so suddenly yesterday, something came up. If you want, we can still go out? I'm free at 6!"

she giggles and says, "It's alright! Yeah, I'd love to. How about we meet up at the café?"

I smile gently, "Sounds good, I'll see you then!"

I hang up and put on my jacket, "Time to go out."

I take the bus to the grocery store and buy some canned sardines, I look at my phone and check the time it shows 12:27, I smile feeling bubbly inside, I say happily "Alright! I still got time!"

I take another bus to the outskirts of the city, there I walk to an abandoned, wooden house. Approaching the entrance, I hear a cat meowing.

As I walk to the side of the house, I look around and see a few kittens playing, I walk over and pet them, "Hey! Did you miss me? I brought some treats!"

As I place the canned sardines down on the grass and open it up, I hear crackling behind me, "You always come here every week kid, don't you get tired?"

I smile and look at the person behind me, It's an old lady. The same old lady I see here every week, "It's because I know how they feel, having no one to count on."

They come closer and put their hand on my shoulder, "Your smile, it's beautiful yet lost."
