Slytherin

I quickly walked out of the room almost tripping on myself. I walked towards the stool and sat down. Professor McGonagall gave me a sympathetic look. I looked at what she was going to put on my head, it looked like a very old and torn hat, it was brown and almost looked like it had a face.

"Ms.Hawkes' magic was not detected until this year, she is indeed going to be joining the fifth years as she is that age. No one shall bother her with questions, act like she is a normal student." A very old guy said. I thought maybe that was the Dumbledore Hermione has told me about.

McGonagall places the hat on my head and the room somehow got even quieter. I felt the hat move which freaked me out seeing as it just a hat.

"Hmmm, very cunning, but brave as well, how about, SLYTHERIN!" The hat yelled, I was very shocked to find out the hat could actually talk. McGonagall took me to the last table or the right and told me to go sit beside some boy with blonde hair. I went and sat next to him and stared at my hands awkwardly. I didn't know anyone in this house, all of my friends were in Griffindor. I looked up and made eye contact with the twins, they gave a sympathetic look, which I returned.

-

I didn't really talk to anyone during dinner. Some boy had tried to make conversation with me, and the boy next to me called himself Draco, and he called the other boy Zabini so I assumed that was his name.

The Slythern head girl took me from dinner early to show me around the common room. It was very green and dark, it was in the dungeons after all. She showed me where I would be sleeping and all of my stuff was already there.

I couldn't sleep that night so I went down to the common room and sat on the couch just thinking. It started getting cold so I set a fire and just watched it. I didn't hear the person coming up behind me. I felt a hand on my shoulder.

"Ah!" I turned around to see the boy again. He looked alarmed when I screamed. "Sorry," I whispered. He came around and sat next to me on the couch.

"Don't be, I scared you," he laughed lightly. "My names Blaise by the way." He said.

"I'm Briar, wait didn't Draco call you-" he cut me off.

"Zabini, that's my last name, he calls everyone by their last names thinking it more intimidating. Don't be surprised if he calls you, er, what's your last name?" He turned to ask me.

"Hawkes," I smiled.

"Hawkes. You know, he's actually really fun to be around once you get to know him. He has a hard life that's all, plus the whole pure blood thing." Blaise sighed rolling his eyes.

"The what?" I asked confused.

"Oh, uh well it's like if both your parents are wizard and witch's you're a pure blood, if only one is you're a half blood and if both parents are muggles you're a muggle born. A lot of pure bloods don't like muggle borns, they call muggle borns mud bloods, meaning like dirty blood." He gave me a sympathetic look.

"Oh," I sighed looking down.

"Not everyone thinks that, just stuck up pure bloods who think they're better than everyone." He smiled. I looked up and met his eyes. I noticed he had a gold ring around the iris of his eye. His eyes looked really pretty in the fire.

"What the bloody hell is going on?" I heard a voice say. I turned to see Draco standing with a disgusted look on his face. He came around to the front of the couch and sat down.

"Can I help you?" I asked, Draco looked at Blaise and back to the fire.

"You are one of the only muggle borns I will tolerate, you shall be allowed to hangout with me and Zabini, since he's practically in love with you." Draco lightly laughed. I laughed when I saw Blaise blushing.

"So does this mean, you won't terrorize me?" I joked. Draco looked shocked but quickly realized I was joking and laughed.

The three of us talked almost all night and we got along very well. I came to realize Draco wasn't as bad as everyone said he was. He was just brought up as the wrong kind of wizard. Honestly if people just got to know him they would see this themselves. Blaise, he was sweet, kind of dorky actually. He and Draco had grown up together. He's a pure blood as well. Funny how even though I'm a muggle born I'm now friends with one of the most feared pure blood slytherin and his best friend.

As I headed to my first class I was immediately found by the twins.

"So, how was it?" Fred asked looking quite worried.

"It was fine, I actually became friends with-" I was cut off by George.

"Has Malfoy talked to you yet? If he even says anything about you being a muggle born we-" it was my turn to cut him off.

"No, no, don't worry, I was going to say, I became friend with Blaise and Draco last night." I said. The twins stopped in their tracks.

"Friends?" They said in unison. I nodded.

"Are you sure?" Fred asked.

"Yup, Draco isn't that bad once you get to know him." I said.

"Okay well, you may be friends with him and Zabini but we'll be watching them, if they-" I cut George off.

"Sorry guys class is about to start, see you later." I ran to my class and waved goodbye.

Once I got to my class I looked around the room for a place to sit, Hermione was sitting with Luna, Harry and Ron we're sitting together. I turned to look at the other half of the classroom and saw Blaise waving me over to come sit with him. I smiled walked over.

"Where Draco?" I asked.

"Sitting with Pansy," he pointed to a girl with short black hair and pale skin, she was leaning against Draco who looked miserable.

"Is she his girlfriend?" I asked.

"Far from it, she's obsessed with him." He shivered. "She won't leave him alone, last year they made a bet, I honestly don't remember what it was but if she won he had to sit with her in every class and if he won she couldn't talk to him all year."

"I'm assuming she won?" I said making a gross face as I looked back over at them. Draco looked very miserable. He looked up as Blaise and I were looking over there and mouthed out,

"Help me!" I laughed making Draco groan and put his head to the table.

I looked around the classroom to try and find the teacher, my eyes landed on Harry waving at me. Hermione and Ron both looked to where he was waving and they all gave me a confused look. I just shook my head and smiled. I mouthed out,

"After class." They all nodded and faced forward.

-

After class I told Blaise to save me a seat with him next class, and that I would be there in a bit. I waited till Hermione and them got out of class. They eventually got out of class and came and stood by me.

"So, you and Blaise?" Hermione said.

"No, I think he fancies me but I've only known him one night." I laughed.

"So are you friends with them?" Harry asked giving me a look I couldn't quite read.

"Yeah, Draco's actually really nice and quite funny once you get to know him." I stated. The two boys shook their heads and sighed.

"Just be careful." Ron said.

"Whatever, hurry let's get to class." I said.

We all walked to our next class, I went and immediately sat next to Blaise who as I requested saved me a spot.

That night I couldn't sleep again, so I went out of bed and headed to the common room. I made a fire again and started thinking. I was just about to go to sleep when I heard a tap at the window, I was confused because everyone should have been asleep. I got up and went to the window. I opened the window and an owl flew in with a letter in its beak.
