I stood outside on my pavement and watched as the repairmen did the finishing touches to the windows. "All done ma'am," the taller one said to me while cleaning his hand on a piece of rag. I couldn't help but think he would look better with his shirt off.
I still couldn't comprehend the fact that he called me ma'am even after I had told him my name. I was slightly pissed about it but I figured he was simply being polite, I mean I was obviously a young lady -I refuse to think child.
It wasn't until he cleared his throat that I realized I stood unmoving gawking at him. I closed my mouth shut and turned to examine the newly fixed windows as my cheeks grew warm and I had to admit the windows were nicely done though it was very obvious that it was just done especially with the new paint job.
"Thank you," I said without giving my reply much thought. "It is just right."
"No need to thank me, it is our job." As he spoke his partner picked up the broken windows that had been removed each on both hands and began walking to the truck. The truck was painted white with large writing that said 'Phen Windows', this was written in blue. I watched him open the back doors and he put in the broken windows.
"I'm guessing this is all," his taller partner words drew my attention back to him, I turned to find his gaze on me.
"Y-yeah," I wanted to flirt with him but I know I would just embarrass myself. There was also the fact that he was at least ten years older than me and he could tell I found him attractive and I hated that, he didn't seem to mind.
"Nice to meet you Mrs…" It was a joke, the smirk on his face hinted on it. On a good day, I would have giggled but not today. I felt myself frown and without giving it much thought I spun on my heel and walked back into the house. I didn't reply.
"That was fast." She was back on the stairs, she had gone up to her room when the repairmen arrived.
"Hmmm," I had absolutely nothing to say to her, at least not right now. "Aren't you going to help with the cleanup?" I had cleaned up the broken glass before Phen Windows arrived but now that they were done there was residue all over the place from fixing the windows.
"I don't see why I should, you handled the glasses nicely and all by yourself too. I'm sure you'd manage fine."
I was looking away from her while she spoke as I looked at the mess I had to take care of. I turned my gaze to her to give her a piece of my mind only to see she was nowhere to be found. I nearly had a fit. The *****!
I heard my mind censor the swear word. "Tsk!" Now that I know who she was, she didn't mind showing her skills every now and then. While I was cleaning, she remained on the stairs watching me. "Won't you join me?" I had asked.
"Nah, if I take one step from here I would burn with a sizzling sound and the smell of burning flesh would be pungent in the air."
I didn't need the details, I simply wanted to know if she could help too. The creepy part was that she had watched me without moving from that spot and never taking her eyes off me. Every time I glanced towards her, her eyes were on me, it was annoying as hell. Just standing there, staring.
I couldn't comment on it so I had just cleaned up as fast as I could making sure not ever glance her way. The worst part was I couldn't dare use the vacuum that would have made it so much faster instead I had to settle for a broom and dustpan.
I sighed at her absence and went to the pantry. At least this time I could use the vacuum but I also had mopping and rag cleaning to do. I returned to the living room and started cleaning. Thankfully, I was done minutes before my mum walked into the house.
I just stepped out of the shower when I heard her scream my name. I know I said scream but really it was more like a faint shout. My walls were quite thin so I could even hear sounds from the kitchen if I strained hard enough.
I didn't respond and I doubted she wanted me too. She just wanted to state her presence, she most likely hasn't noticed the new windows yet. I didn't want to be there when she did, I still couldn't lie very well to my parents.
I dressed as slowly as I could since it was already dark, I thought I might as well change into my nightclothes. The pattern on my pajamas was Cupid arrow in a heart, I thought it was ridiculous. I tied my hair in a ponytail and walked downstairs.
I knocked twice then a voice said, "Come in."
I opened the door as quietly as I could and found my mother sitting on her huge bed I was terribly envious of. "Hey mama," for some weird reason Black Eyed Peas' song started playing in the back of my head.
"Hey baby," I loved her voice. It was one of the things I wish I had inherited from her amongst tons of other things. "Hope you weren't too lonely and bored all by yourself."
You wouldn't believe the day I had. "Nah I wasn't, Mia found a way to send me a message and I watched movies all day."
"Sounds like you had fun." Her grinned was subtle and I could swear it was the best thing I had seen all day. I guess I had completely forgotten how bizarre my day has been but my mum's normal made it unforgettable.
Fun? I almost chuckled. That was a very nice and mild way to put what had happened earlier. "Yeah it was, Aunt Carly kept me company for the most part of it."
My mum's reaction was instantaneous, she didn't even try to hide it. "What would we eat for dinner? I'm thinking pizza, I already told your dad to get some on his way home. Now hurry out, I want to wash up. I'll be out in a few."
She blew a kiss to me and kept her eyes on me as I slowly walked out of her room without saying another word. The funny part was how she acted like her obvious avoidance of the subject was so normal. I didn't say anything cause I already had a date with the vampire upstairs, the horse was definitely going to spill everything. I intended to make sure of that.
