As we were sneaking around the castle, Arthur asked me if it was a good idea to leave the castle, but I just kept walking. We snuck out through a small door behind the garden fence and went into the woods behind the castle, carefully avoiding any and all guards as we did. Arthur diligently followed me through the trees without losing sight of me until he bumped into my leg.
I turned around and picked him up. He didn't really like being picked up, but there's no other way to get him up the tree. I walked around the tree until I found a hidden ladder and delicately balanced him in my arms as I climbed the ragged ladder. At the top, there was a rest area in the middle of the tree with blankets and pillows. Arthur asked where we were and I told him it was my hiding place.
When the castle felt too stuffy for my liking, I would sometimes sneak away to my little hideaway with Kevin and Elizabeth and we'd sleep under the stars. Elizabeth stopped going to the hideout after Kevin's funeral and she never went back since. We talked about Arthur's adventures with Kevin and Zephyr and Merlin, and I could hear the sadness in his voice as he fell asleep telling me his favorite tales with them.
I soon fell asleep and found myself getting yelled at by Kevin for just getting up and leaving the castle with no guard during a time of war. I told him that the war hadn't begun yet, and he said that we weren't the only ones preparing for war. He told me I had to be extra vigilant especially because the other side thinks I'm dead. He then looked me in the eyes and asked me what was really wrong.
I told him how I was questioning if Merlin made a mistake giving me the pendant since it felt like I couldn't do anything right. Kevin stated that "a sorcerer does not choose magic, magic chooses its receiver. A gift is hard to control, that's why they're so miraculous." The pendant chose me and that was the end of the argument, which was what I really needed to hear.
I woke up the next morning and was ready to return home, so I picked Arthur up again and went down the ladder. At the bottom, we heard horses coming from behind us, and I instinctively told Arthur to run as I was grabbed and put on a horse. They held a cloth to my face as they searched for Arthur, but I confirmed that he got away right before I passed out.
