Chapter 3: The mad scientist

'Four years ago, a certain young man was waiting inside of my house, casually sat on my sofa and looked at my precious photo album...'

That day Lynx and the professor met for the first time. It was a rather strange first encounter because the professor was divorced and lived alone.

That evening, the professor returned home once in a while.

He looked very tired and probably planned to sleep, as soon as he enters his room.

However, after locking the door and entered the house, he stopped and stayed still after seeing the person sitting in his living room.

After a second of reflection, the professor realized that the person was young, and oddly he wasn't surprised at all when he entered the room. It was like he already knew, that the professor wouldn't panic and call the police.

With a calm and deep voice, the professor asked "Who are you?"

The young man stayed quiet as if he wanted him to sit.

The professor put down his bag, untied his necktie, and took off his coat.

Indeed, he was surprised, but he experienced many things in his lifetime, so at least he knew that this young man didn't come here to kill him. Otherwise, he would have been already killed at the door.

There was a room for discussions, or so he thought.

Quietly, The professor carefully breaded some tea, prepared two teacups, and filled them. Then he served it to the mysterious young man before sitting comfortably on a chair, with a cup of tea on his hands.

The young man closed the album, then took a sip of tea.

"It's good..."

Without a doubt, that gesture cleared some of the suspicions that the professor had.

After a sip of tea, the young man looked at the professor right in the eye, without a trace of fear or malice, then said, "Sorry for intruding but I had my reasons... I cannot let anyone know that I am here... And for your safety too..."

His voice was pretty mature despite his age, and that surprised the professor a little, then at his turn, he took a sip of tea too.

After putting the teacup carefully, the professor took a deep breath and asked, " Young man, can you tell me the reason for your visit?"

The room was quiet and they continued to look at each other's eyes, then after a second of silence the young man asked: "Professor, what do you think of this world?"

Surprised by this sudden question, the professor replied "That's really sudden huh... Even if you ask me that... Mmmmm... Well, I think it's boring..."

There were some reasons for that answer. Probably, because the professor already gave up on trying at some point.

In this world, people with superpower considered themselves above normal humans. Even if sometimes it was unconsciously, most of them thought that.

However, those who took more damage were the ones who had power but at a low level.

Around 20 percent of the gifted people are low level. That means, that they were between the two categories of humans. Not totally normal, but possess a useless power or almost at a nonexistent level. They are at the same time exploited by the powerful and hated by the weak.

Davis Splein was considered a genius since he was a child, despite his low level. When he grew up, he led the evolution of humanity's technology.

The higher-ups, the nobles, the association of non-gifted and even some dark organizations had great expectations for him.

Even though, at first, he just invented because of pure curiosity, love for science, and technology. There was huge pressure on his shoulders all of sudden.

He wanted to meet these expectations and in the end, he crossed the line of no return. He even sacrificed his family, his private life, and devoted himself to his researches. Just to create more amazing inventions. At first, he found it exciting and he savored the feeling of guilt and madness as he grew more confident in his abilities. A genuine mad scientist.

The experiences that he did that time were too cruel that they were erased from history.

However, he was still a human and even if he tried hard to become a different person, he still had his other emotions left deep inside. As time passed, they resurged again.

The people around him were just happy and excited, seeing his new inventions. They praised him for his intelligence and his hard work, without even questioning or reflecting on what he did in order to create these things. These people continued to live as usual and went home to their families when the evening came.

When he realized it, Davis already hit the bottom of the bottom, with no one waiting for him when he returned home exhausted mentally and physically.

His bed was his only best friend, but they didn't meet often. Two times a month at most.

He asked himself "Why am I even doing this shit?"

Because it wasn't for humanity's sake anymore at that point, nor for himself.

Time didn't wait for him to find that answer though. Before he knew it, he grew older without even knowing the purpose of his life.

He didn't even have the time to drink some beer to wash away his worries, even a little.

He liked inventing stuff, but what he was doing at that time had nothing to do with creativity anymore.

He was just being exploited. Even he understood that, but he couldn't stop anymore because it was already too late. Even if he stopped, no one would care about him and he would have been eliminated like everyone else before him. That's how it was before and this time too, and probably as long as humans still coexist in a society.

In the end, he just stopped thinking like a robot. Of course, that didn't work too and his mental torture continued day and night. Guilt and the feeling of emptiness consumed him, to the point that the drugs that he took didn't have any relevant effect anymore. He was desperate and sometimes he even considered suicide.

He finally turned 40 and became more and more anxious.

It was at that time when he met Lynx, who waited for him inside his house.

This encounter changed his life but his sins will haunt him for the rest of his life.

That was probably the reason for his reply to Lynx's question.

Lynx was surprised by the professor's reply but he couldn't ask for a better answer, because the reason for his visit was...

"Help me or I will kill you... However, if you agree to help me, then surely the world won't be boring anymore..."

Lynx said these words with a passionate voice and a little smirk on his face.

The professor probably wondered about Lynx's mental state at that moment. However, with the existence of superpowers, it was not rare to find some cheeky brats who think that they are the king of the world.

Nevertheless, Lynx's eyes didn't show any trace of a lie.

The professor thought that maybe, only a little chance but maybe this young man could show him the world from a different point of view. That's why he agreed to listen to his argument that evening.

In the end, they started their new adventure together from that day.

Four years had passed since their encounter and the professor became more attached to Lynx.

Lynx considered him as a partner though, not as a parent, and that worked perfectly for both of them.

The professor watched over Lynx for all of these years, so he realized that Lynx was a kind-hearted person and that's why he had a conflicted feeling because he knew Lynx's intentions and hidden personality.

However, he decided to support him.

That was the reason why he insisted on the Infiltration. He wanted Lynx to face the reality for good.

After four years of preparation, it was time to make their move.

Still, it was Lynx's first time doing things for real. The professor always made it more comfortable for him without making it obvious.

He knew about Lynx's big pride and arrogance. That was probably why he asked if Lynx was scared when he entered that storage room.

Then Lynx answered, "Hmph...There is no time to get scared..."

"Haha..."

The professor knew that Lynx was this type of person.

"However, Lynx... You entered the storage room but what are you going to do now? Entering the backdoor was surely easier you know, right now you are already right in the middle of the enemy territory...."

Certainly, it was hard to move without being noticed from that point. 'What was Lynx thinking?' The professor wondered.
