Chapter 27

One advantageous thing about doing Luna's job was that you don't have to work hard, it doesn't take much of your time and your brain doesn't blast in your skull. But today was an exception. I, unfortunately, had a lot of work to correct and had to return home around five, tired and sleepy. Well, still not too late.

Lucas' parents stayed at his place in their room, so nothing changed in Lucas' and mine's sleeping arrangements. One plus point for having a big house. But his parents would leave soon on a different trip towards Asian countries. Their lives are full of joy without any worries and tensions, I envy how pleasantly they are cutting every day of their life.

I let out a yawn walking into the kitchen and flicking on the lights. I ran a hand through my messy short black hair while running my eyes. It was two in the morning and I hadn't fallen asleep, the reason hasn't been posted in my brain so I had no idea why.

I put the water on the heat for some tea and got myself in one the chairs, scrolling through my usual recommendation news feed. My fingers stopped when my ears caught a sound, the pressure on my ears let me know that someone had woken up from their sleep and were heading towards somewhere near the area where I was.

It was a whopping shock to my system when Lucas sauntered in the kitchen, looking normal, unlike all other tiring days. He didn't seem to feel the same surprise as to how I felt.

"What are you doing here?" I asked. "Couldn't sleep?"

"Yeah, I couldn't. I was thinking about stuff and heard your footsteps." He walked around the kitchen, stopping by to check the water and turned off the heat.

"How's your pain?" I looked at him confused.

He took a moment before slowly starting, "...I mean your period cramps. Do you feel any pain? I can get you some pain relievers."

My facial look softened at his offer. "Thanks, but I'm fine."

"Alright," he said. "What about your shoulder pain?"

I touched my shoulder, for a moment I didn't get him what he was asking but then realized that he meant the pain from the car accident I suffered. It gave me a whoosh of happiness that he remembered my issues or problems.

"The pain's long gone." I chuckled. "I don't feel it anymore."

"How much sugar will you take?

I lifted my forefinger. "One."

"Why are you awake?"

I pulled out my bottom lip and lifted my shoulders a bit. "Not sure why. It's not the first time though."

He chuckled while handing the tea with vapours heating my face. I blew the contents in the cup.

"Are you going to the office tomorrow?" He sat beside me.

I shook my head. "I don't have anything to attend."

I sipped my tea. "Your parents.... they are really nice. Your mother's very understanding."

He smiled gazing at the side of my face as I continued sipping on my tea. "You're right. My mother has always been by my side no matter how wrong I was, she trusts me more than anything and father has trained me in such a way that I don't fear any darks of the world."

"That's nice to hear." I smiled. "But...I was just wondering, have you ever faced a tough time in your life? Like a really tough one."

He nodded. "I did."

I looked at him like a child getting ready for a bedtime story.

He was about to take a sip of his tea but seeing my curious eyes he melodiously laughed. "Cute. Fine, let me begin. Have you ever heard of the story about the previous Alpha Head of this country?"

I shook my head.

"So, it happened a decade ago when Alpha Head Marcus used to lead the country. He was a selfish, utterly brainless and over-confident man. He gave all the higher positions to those who were related to him, not to those who deserved it and my father was one of them. When he raised his voice against the discrimination he angered him more with his connections which led to a fight between him and us."

"He lost and died in the war, his pack and his supporters were stripped from their titles and spared the life of his mate, she should be glad. My father was allotted the Alpha Head, during that I was severely hurt and had to watch my fighters fall down lifeless on the ground, that was the horrible time. I couldn't sleep for years, it haunted me until I was twenty."

"Even you went to the war?"

Lucas leaned on his chair, folding his arms on his chest which bulged his muscles, the shapes as clear as transparent glass.

"That was my second one."

I smiled whilst narrowing my eyes and counting on his age. "A decade means.... you were seventeen? Right?"

He nodded. "I was eighteen."

I gasped. "You are four years older than me."

"That doesn't matter." He brushed off the non-existing issue.

Well.... it was not.

Alpha Lucas' honey orbs suddenly caught mine, our faces quietly breaking into a huge smile.

We looked at each other, smiling softly. The night was cool, no sounds out, time was three now and we gazed at each other's eyes instead of sleeping. It was a nice time, spending time with the person you adore. It was worth sacrificing my sleep because nights like these wouldn't come every night.

"Heaven?" I glanced at him, a sign for him to go on. "Would you mind if I ask you a question?"

I blinked confused. "About what?"

"Your parents? I don't know anything about them?"

The kitchen room fell into silence and Lucas watched me expecting to see a reaction out of me, but my story is too old. It all happened when I was fifteen, nine years ago. The ache left a stain but I didn't mind sharing him about my parents. I'm fact, I didn't mind anyone knowing about my story.

"My parents were a mess." I chuckled dully, swirling the liquid in the cup. "I always thought my parents were those type of lovey-dovey couple, my father's love towards my mother was so much, it was as intense as werewolves. My mother—I have no idea if she even gave a chance to my father. I don't even know anything actually, it all happened so quickly—"

Lucas grabbed my hand in a comforting way, I gave a small smile to him, he mouthed, "It's fine."

"I was fifteen years old when I caught my mother talking on the phone with someone frequently, I thought it was my father and left it. My father, he was such a fool in love that he didn't see what was coming for him," I stopped, taking a shaky deep breath.

"One day when I returned home, I saw my father crying continuously, h-he wouldn't stop even for a second. That's when I got to know that my mother ran away. My father didn't tell me the reason but I'm sure she did that for a guy."

Lucas' eyes dulled when he saw a tear trail down my face, he cleaned it with his knuckles gazing into my soul, comforting that he was there. His grip tightened on my hand which had me do the same.

"When my mother left—I mean ran away, my father became nothing more than a lifeless human, he didn't sleep nor he went to his office. During that time I faced the actual meaning of life, running along the roads searching for a part-time job, crying for hours that my mother left and my father was in depression, scratching my head that I slowly failing in my studies and nearly burning the house because I had no idea how to cook, wasn't even in a state to take classes for it. I lost hope.... in my life."

"Then like a ray of light my new neighbour saw my misery and helped me a lot in everything, she did everything my mother failed to do, she treated me like her own daughter and even I even used to call her mom. But during that, my father committed suicide and left me with nothing. Well, by looking at his condition I expected it one day."

Lucas sighed deeply, he held no expression but I could feel his sadness through his touch. "What about your neighbour? Doesn't she live with anyone?"

"She told me that my husband died in a car accident and her son was out in another country to study, but she suddenly vanished after my father's funeral, I never met her after that," I muttered, rubbing off the tears.

"What's her name? Your neighbour's name?"

"Sheryl Samson."
