Sarah bent down to hook the broken pieces of marble tile in either side of the second step's gaps, pointing their edges in upward directions.

She then started to ascend the steps and stopped on the fifth step.

Sarah pulled out some smooth and shiny white pebbles from her pants pockets and started to arrange them on the steps in crisscross positions, leaving one step as a gap between the two pebbles.

After she was done, Sarah went upstairs while looking around her and stood outside Samar's bedroom. She put her hands inside her pants pockets and stared at the door in a daze. Her heart was beating with anxiety and nervousness.

After a moment of contemplation, she knocked on the door. "Brother! Breakfast is ready! Maa's calling you!"
