“You can sit and relax here; I’ll be back in a minute,” He said directing me towards the massive living room.
It had a homely feel to it quite contrary to the exterior modern appearance of this house. The walls were painted a light beige shade with two wide windows letting in warm rays of sunlight to light up the room.
The area was swathed in shades of brown.
Long brown curtains draped the windows. The fur carpet in the middle was a rich coffee color as I padded across it to the large soft light brown couches placed in an L-shape on one side of the wall.
A beautiful medium sized fireplace sat in front of it, polished in a milky white color attracting attention towards its magnificence. It again had a touch of homeliness to it with beautiful pictures placed on top of it in various frames.
Keeping my purse on the small table beside the couch I moved forward to sneak a look at the family pictures closely, to get an insight on what was about to come.
“Scarlet, I’d like you to meet someone,” the sound of his voice startled me and I stopped abruptly from going any further, then slowly turned to my left to see Andrew standing near the hallway, alone.
I was dying of awkwardness; from him, probably catching me gawking at everything, standing in the middle of this unknown living room. Quickly dismissing that thought and giving him an unkempt smile, I focus all my attention on him more intrigued at who I was going to meet.
Taking my smile as an affirmation he let out a deep breath still uncertainty swimming in his eyes. He was clearly uncomfortable by this situation.
Then why was he doing it?
I didn’t know that, but it felt like he needed some sort of comfort from me. Deciding to help him I took a step forward when he moved inside from the corridor into the room, unblocking the hallway.
My steps halted in its place as I saw a small girl shyly smiling at me. She was most likely around five years old and was looking every sense of adorable in her white frock.
Her beautiful dirty blonde hair was flowing down her small figure up to her waist framing a small round face and a button nose, adorned with two big doe eyes, the color of the beautiful ocean. A set of pretty pink lips completed her look of a doll.
She had a familiarity to her that, I had grown accustomed to for the past few days.
She looked like a mini Andrew.
I looked up at Andrew, tearing away my eyes from the girl standing in front of me to find him already staring at me.
I couldn’t understand what he was expecting from me, but I decided to take matters in my hand and leave the questions for later as he wanted me to.
Squatting down on my knees and sitting on the plush carpet to come to her height, I waved at her and said, “Hi! Princess would you like to be friends with me? I am Scarlet.”
She nodded still giving me shy glances as she played with the end of her frock.
This was weird, I usually tried to stay a mile away from kids but here I was trying to make friends with one.
I looked up at Andrew to see him smiling softly at the scene enrolling in front of him. He knew how difficult this was for me and yet, he was doing nothing to help me!
I shot him a look of plea but he brushed it off with a shrug, almost certainly wanting me to do this by myself.
Was he testing me?
I have never been good with kids nor do I like them much because of their usually loud and naughty behavior but this girl was quite different from others, in some sense she reminded me of Blu when she was a kid.
One of the few reasons why I had taken an instant liking to her.
This gave me an idea; if this girl was anything like Blu then I knew how to get through her.
“Can you pass me my purse?” I asked Andrew, who nodded and gave it to me questioningly.
I grinned up at him. If he thought I couldn’t pass his test then he was going to be proved wrong.
Taking out two Hershey’s kisses from my purse which I had on me for whenever Blu had a chocolate craving, I presented them to her and said, “I’ll give this to you if you tell me your name, deal?”
At the sight of the chocolates, she perked up and nodded moving forward, taking little steps. When she reached me, she once turned towards Andrew to get his affirmation and on receiving it; she looked up at me through her lashes and said, “My name is Anna.”
Her voice wasn’t nasally like the many hyperactive kids I had met her age, no; she had a soft musical voice.
“There you go Anna. We are now best friends,” I cheered giving her the chocolates from my hand in her little palms.
The first full smile broke on her face and taking it from me she raced towards Andrew, passing one to him.
Now that was something Baby Blu would never do.
I laughed at that thought internally. Blu could share anything and everything with me except her chocolates.
Picking her up and refusing to take her chocolate he brought her over to me as I stood up, “This is my most precious belonging, my sister Anna.”
The way he said it seemed odd but again putting my questions for later I sarcastically smiled at him and said, “I never would have guessed that.”
Laughing at my response, he motioned for us to sit on the couch. Placing his little sister in between us, I could see a gratefulness shining through his eyes every time he looked at his happy sister making me feel something inside which I didn’t want to discover.
