"What should we do," Kies asked while looking around at their attackers. Whatever the things were, they were now a little more than halfway out of the ground. Though it was hard to see with so little light, Kies was able to make out what had attacked them. The creatures were a mess of rotting flesh and bones. Most of them had missing limbs and had trouble walking upright.
"We run in that direction." Ammine pointed between a huge group of undead monsters that were almost out of the ground.
"Aren't there more of them in that direction than the others?"
"That's why we're going this way."
"What!?" Ammine grabbed Kies's wrist and dragged him through the horde of undead. Though Kies didn't know why they were going this way, he didn't have time to question her decision. Surprisingly enough, they were able to brush past all of them with no problem. "Huh? They're very slow," Kies noted.
"These ones are frail and slow which makes them really easy to deal with. You just need to make sure that you don't get surrounded by them."
"But why are we running towards where there are more of them?" Kies looked around and saw that the further they ran, the more of those undead creatures there were. They were practically everywhere around them at this point.
"Do you ever try using your head before asking?"
"Sorry. but I don't know any of these things."
Ammine elbowed an undead out of the way as they ran. "I'll give you a hint. Do you remember what his highness said before about lesser undead gathering under more powerful ones?"
"Oh. The weaker undead are attracted to the stronger ones which means that there will be more of these things the closer we get to the powerful one?"
"Yes, now shut up and focus on running. I can't concentrate on avoiding the undead while talking." Ammine let go of Kies's wrist to elbow another undead that was in their way with her other arm. They had only been running for a couple of seconds and the number of undead has increased exponentially.
"Is that where we are supposed to go?" Kies pointed somewhere to their left where there was a huge concentration of undead. They were pretty spread out but they would be swarmed within seconds if they stopped for a moment in there.
"It looks like it." Ammine sprinted ahead of Kies towards a cluster of undead and tore them apart with her magic. It only took her one punch to take down the entire group. Kies sped up his pace as well and followed behind Ammine and was careful to dodge the limbs that were sent flying at him.
They ran for another minute before Ammine abruptly stopped, causing Kies to almost crash into her. Ammine let out a curse and Kies looked around to see what had happened.
"I don't see anything," said Kies. There was nothing around them. In fact, there was nothing at all around them. There were no undead anymore.
"We're surrounded," said Ammine.
"How can you tell?" Kies scanned the area around them but couldn't find anything.
"I can sense them all around us. We have no way to get out either since they have every exit blocked."
"What do we do now?"
Ammine's fist flared up with magic as she said, "We're going to have to fight our way out. It looks like that way is the weakest." She pointed behind them where they had come from. Ammine took a step in that direction and then stopped and cursed again. "We can't escape anymore."
"What is it this time?" Kies could only rely on Ammine to explain to him what was going on since he couldn't sense what was happening around him.
"It looks like they lured us into the circle and closed it the moment we got in. Whoever is commanding these undead is clever. They anticipated our moves and trapped us."
Kies tried thinking of some way for them to get out of this mess and then an idea popped in his head. "You can fly us out," he suggested to Ammine.
"No, that won't work." Ammine turned down the idea instantly. "Whoever trapped us probably knows that I can fly and they probably have some way to stop us from doing so. We can't risk it."
"Youuuu..." echoed a voice from somewhere around them.
Ammine raised up her fists and Kies also did the same. They stood back to back and got ready to face whatever it was that was after them.
"Whaaaaat..." came again. But this time, Ammine and Kies were able to pinpoint where the voice was coming from and turned to face that direction.
