Night Rescue II

"But before we do that, let me change our disguises first," Falte said.

"To what?" Ammine asked while inspecting the weapon she just picked up. She swung it a few times to get a feel of it before planting it into the dirt.

"Something that is less likely to give away our identity." Falte walked over to Ammine and chanted a spell. Ammine's face changed and she grew animal ears and a tail as well.

"What's this?" Ammine put her hand on top of her head but it went straight through the ears.

"Beastmen ears and tails," Falte told her while he walked over to Kies and Jasyeu and did the same thing for them before doing it to himself as well.

"Oh, that's clever."

"Anyway, what's the plan? Are we sneaking into there or do we just screw it and go loud?" Falte asked after he was done with everyone's disguises.

"We'll try to stay quiet for as long as we can. All we need to do is release the prisoners trapped in there and escape with Messa while the entire place is in chaos," Ammine said.

"And after that?"

"We'll figure that out when the time comes."

"Alright then, let's fly over now that all the guards are out of the way."

"Okay, I'll grab Kies and you take Jasyeu." Ammine walked over to Kies and got ready to lift him but he took a step back away from her before she could. "What? Is there something wrong?" she asked Kies confusedly while retracting her hand.

"I'm not feeling well," Kies told her. He wasn't ready to kill humans yet, but he couldn't tell them that. He lived among them for so long that the idea of killing them didn't sit right with him. He needed some time on his own to calm down and figure things out.

"You're not feeling well? That's a first." Ammine looked at Kies but couldn't tell what was wrong. He looked exactly like he was normally. "Well, we can just go with three- Actually, make that two," Ammine said after a short pause.

"What are you talking about?" Falte asked her, clueless about what she was talking about. "What do you mean by two?"

"I'm pretty sure we can infiltrate the castle with just us two," she told him.

"Yes we could," Falte agreed, but what he didn't understand was why. "But is that really a good idea when we could have all four of us go?"

"Well, Kies isn't feeling well, and I don't think Jasyeu would be able to help us much in enclosed spaces. Plus, it's also easier to move around with just the two of us than going as a group," she told Falte.

Ammine's reasons were pretty convincing and Falte took a few seconds to think over them before agreeing to it. "Alright. I guess it will only be the two of us going."

Ammine translated to Jasyeu what they were doing and the small demon nodded her head. She then turned to Kies and said, "In the meanwhile, you can find us a place to stay or something," she suggested to Kies. They needed a base or a hideout since they were going to be here for a while.

"I can do that," Kies accepted the task. He wasn't sure how he would manage that with no money, but he will have to figure something out somehow. Also, there were no inns for travelers to stay in the entire kingdom. Because of the war, the inns have been turned into production facilities or torn down since there were no people staying in them.

"But how will we find each other again," Kies asked. It was going to be difficult to find each other again in such a big place if they separated.

"Oh, don't worry about that," Ammine told him. "We demons can sense one another so we will be able to find you no matter where you are in the kingdom," she assured him.

Falte walked over to the Kies and Jasyeu and retracted the magic from him while turning Jasyeu back into a human before walking away again. "We should go. We don't have all the time in the world for this," he said to Ammine.

"Yeah. Well, good luck," Ammine told the two before flying up into the air along with Falte. It was a strange sight to see since neither of them had their wings showing as they were hidden by Falte's magic. To Kies, it just looked like they were magically floating in the air. The two of them took off towards the castle.

Kies waited for them to disappear from his sight before moving from his spot. He looked down at Jasyeu who was staring at the sky where the two demons disappeared and flew off in. There was a sad look in her eyes which Kies assumed was because she wanted to fly but couldn't. "We should get moving as well," he told her, not sure if she understood what he said.

The small demon looked at him. Despite not understanding a single word that Kies said, she knew what he meant and followed him and he started walking through the alleys. The entire place was like a maze but Kies knew how to navigate through them like he knew the back of his hand. The two only walked for a few minutes before they had to stop because they heard some voices ahead.

Kies was confused. The alleys were usually empty, even in the morning when everyone was up and about. So why were there people in here so late at night? The only thing that came to his mind was that they were crooks of some sort. Kies eavesdropped on the voices around the corner.

"D*mned brats. Wish they would just shut their pie holes."

"Can't blame that on them. They have been locked up and abused for some time now. It's a good thing that we managed to get them out."

One of the men growled. It sounded like an animal's growl. "That doesn't mean they can just yap nonstop. I have a bloody headache. It feels like my skull is gonna split."

"Just deal with it," the other man told him. "You think my head isn't on the verge of exploding either?"

"Ah, whatever."

After that, the voices stopped. Kies peaked around the corner and saw that the two men were still there. He quickly retracted his head before they could spot him. Jasyeu curiously stuck her head around the corner as well, but Kies quickly pulled her back. The small demon looked up at him. Kies shook his head and then put one finger on his lips, gesturing for her to be quiet. He wasn't sure if she understood what he meant, but based on her reactions, it looked like she did.

After some time, the two men started talking to each other again.

"That human has been true to his word so far. I would've bet my tail that he would have betrayed us by now."

"Well, I'd say to keep our guards up. We're only helping each other for the time being, and no doubt after we're done, he'll turn on us."

"I know. I'm just a little surprised that he hasn't yet."

"That's the same for me. One of these days-"

*Crunch.* Kies' head spun over to where the sound had come from. Jasyeu had accidentally stepped on a pebble and made that noise.
