Kies really hoped that Jasyeu hadn't alerted the two men of their presence, but based on how they suddenly stopped speaking mid-sentence, that definitely wasn't the case. He quickly looked around the corner and saw that the two men were missing. "What?" Where had they gone? This wasn't good.
Kies grabbed Jasyeu's arm and immediately started running back down the alley where they came from. They only took a couple of steps before a figure jumped down from seemingly out of nowhere in front of them. "Where do you think you're going cub?"
Kies turned around and was about to run in the other direction but found the other man standing there with his arms crossed. "Why don't you two introduce yourselves. I reckon that's the least you can do right now.
"Are you two beastmen?" Kies asked the man in front of him. It was too dark for him to see them clearly but based on the conversation, he was pretty sure that the two of them were beastmen, but he had to confirm it.
The two men looked at each other. The one behind Kies answered, "We're as much beastmen as you two are human."
"We're not human," Kies quickly responded, though it was probably unbelievable for them since both of them looked exactly like humans.
"Oh really now? Then what are you? You don't smell like one of us, and last I have checked, dwarves aren't that tall and elves aren't that short. That's not to mention the fact that you have no beard and no long pointy ears either," the beastman pointed out.
Everything about them resembled a human, which was a good thing since that meant that Falte's magic was working like a charm. But in rare situations like these, it wasn't going to help them very much. "But we don't smell like humans, do we?" he asked them. Even if they look like humans, according to the beastmen they met in the forest, they don't smell very different.
"Hm... That's true," the one in front of them agreed. "You don't smell like each other either," he also noted.
"Then what are you two?" the one behind them asked if they weren't human.
"Demon," Kies answered. He didn't tell them that he was an Aeos since it was too complicated to explain to them. The only thing that he needed to prove to the two was that one of them, specifically Jasyeu, was a demon. After that, he didn't need to explain his identity since demons and humans aren't exactly on good terms with each other, which meant that he couldn't be one.
"Demon huh? Where are horns, wings, and tails then?"
"Uh, they're hidden by magic."
"Then take it off and show us them. That's the only way we would believe you."
"We can't. It's not our magic. We need the person who cast it to take it off," Kies explained to them. Actually, there might be some way for them to take off the disguise without having Falte here, but he certainly didn't know how to do it, and he was pretty sure Jasyeu didn't know either. Even if she did, he didn't know how to communicate that to her.
The two beastmen looked at each other. "You thinking what I'm thinking?"
"Depends. Are you willing to take the risk?"
"Course not."
"Then we are thinking the same thing."
"Okay, then that settles it."
Kies didn't know what the two beastmen were talking about, but he had a bad feeling about it. It didn't take him very long to see that his intuition was on point as the two beastmen suddenly bared their fangs and ran at him. Without a second wasted, Kies summoned a wall of wind around them to block the two beastmen. But since there was no incantation, the spell was very weak and it didn't take two hits for the beastmen to break it.
Kies hadn't finished chanting Wind Cannon when the barrier was broken and the beastmen were right on top of him. Thankfully, Jasyeu's spell went off just in time and two stone pillars shot out of the ground and slammed into the two beastmen, causing them to crash into the walls around them.
"Just our luck, two mages," one of the beastmen coughed as he got up from the ground. He had some blood trickling from his mouth and going down to his neck, but he didn't seem to care.
"Mages ey? What a nice coincidence, I was looking for a good fight to take off some of my stress anyway," the other beastmen said as he also got up from the ground. He tilted his head and cracked his head along with his knuckles.
The alley was small and there was very little space for them to move around in. Jasyeu's stone pillars blocked both of the sides around them, but also blocking off their escape. Well, it wasn't like they could escape anyway since the two beastmen were also in their way, blocking the exits.
The two beastmen slowly closed in on them on both sides, keeping a close eye on any move they might make. Kies started chanting Wind Cannon again, but the two noticed what he was up to and charged in on him, not giving him a chance to finish the spell. They leaped on top of the pillars with little to no effort and then pounced at Kies.
Kies once again had to abandon the spell to put up a barrier on top of him to protect himself. The beastmen collided with the barrier and their weight caused it to disperse, creating a small shockwave of wind that pushed the two back behind the pillars.
Jasyeu shouted out something and the two pillars exploded outwards from her and Kies, sending small rock shrapnels at the beastmen. They both yelped in pain as the rocks pierced through their skin and buried themselves into their flesh.
"Tch, retreat!" the beastman behind them shouted to his partner. He leaped over Kies and Jasyeu before running off with the other beastman. As they retreated, Kies could hear one of them cursing loudly. The voice soon stopped and the night was filled once again with the sound of silence.
