Kies took a few coins and put them in his pocket before heading off into town. He took the alleys as they were the only way he could get to his destination from the slums unseen. He was worried that the beastmen that he encountered yesterday may still be lurking around in there, but all his worrying was for nothing as he made it to where he wanted to go without any trouble.
Kies peeked out of the alleyways and saw that he was in the center of the city. There were a lot of people around and most of them were busy doing their own things, which made it very easy for him to pop out from the alley without anyone noticing. He blended into the crowd easily despite wearing suspicious clothing. There were a couple of soldiers patrolling the streets, but none of them paid any attention to Kies.
He walked over to one of the stalls and brought a bag of bread and then continued to another stall and brought some more food. While doing so, Kies looked around for where he could get water and also took note of what people were saying. Almost everyone was talking about the events that took place last night, so it was easy for him to gather information.
"I heard that it was the beastmen that did it."
"No, it was the elves," a second person disagreed with the first. "They made it through without alerting anyone. Beastmen are loud and wouldn't have been able to pull something like that off," he explained his reason.
"Really? D*mn those elves then."
So far it looked like no one has realized yet that it was actually the demons that broke into the castle last night. Kies continued gathering information with his ears from conversations while searching for somewhere where he could get water. Food wasn't an issue as there were many stalls selling it, but water definitely was. There was no one selling water since there is no point in doing so when people have their own which they can get from their houses. He will have to find some other way to get water.
Kies passed by another group of people and overheard what they were saying.
"I don't know about that one."
"What do you not know about it? I'm making it as simple as I can already. The reason why I fell in love with-"
"Yes, I know. You told me a thousand times already. It's just that it makes no sense."
Not the information he was looking for. Kies continued on and stopped by a huge crowd of people, curious as to what they were doing.
"My word, to think that there was a dog among us the whole time and we didn't notice."
"Kill him!"
Kies walked around the crowd until he found a small gap in which he could see through and took a look to see what had gotten everyone so riled up. There was someone in the center of the crowd who was lying on the ground with their arms covering their head, protecting themselves as several men beat them. It was not a nice sight to see.
Kies didn't know what was going on, but he knew that he couldn't help the person and silently moved on. But as he was about to, he heard a female voice yell, "Stop! Why are you all doing this!?" A figure pushed through the crowd and put herself between the two assailants and the victim.
"What do you think you're doing!? Move out of the way!"
"Yeah, don't you know that they were responsible for what happened yesterday!"
Kies looked back at the crowd which had widened a bit, giving him a better look at what was going on. He now saw clearly that the person who was getting attacked was a young elf boy who looked no older than ten. And in front of the elf boy, was a girl who looked like she was human since otherwise, she would have already been pushed to the ground and been beaten alongside the elf for doing what she just did.
The crowd was blocking the girl and Kies couldn't see her face, but he was pretty sure that she was fairly young as well. It looked like she was around his age, however old that was.
"But this isn't right! He did nothing wrong!" the girl argued.
"Get out of the way! This is your only warning! If you refuse, you will end up like him as well!" one of the assailants shouted at her. "I'll give you ten seconds! Ten! Nine! Eight..." Oh boy. This wasn't going to end well. Kies searched around to see if there was a soldier anywhere that would break up this mess, but couldn't find one. He wanted to help the girl, but he wasn't allowed to draw attention or expose himself.
"-Two! One!" There was a short pause before the assailant asked, "So, are you going to move out of the way or not!" The girl didn't say anything. "That's it! Don't say I didn't warn you!" The two men approached the girl, ready to beat her as well.
There were no soldiers anywhere in sight. Looks like Kies had no choice. He took a deep breath and quickly and quietly chanted "Winds, heed my call and serve my will. Clear a path for me this instant," and aimed it at the roof of a nearby house. He glanced around to make sure that no one was looking and fired it just as the two men were about to grab the girl.
A loud whoosh startled the crowd and they all turned their attention to the sound. The Wind Cannon smashed into the roof of the house, scaring everyone around and causing them to all run away panicking. Kies didn't bother looking back to see if the two were okay and quickly hurried off just like the rest of the crowd to avoid being seen. While he was walking away, he saw the two assailants run past him with frightened looks on their faces.
'Thank goodness.' It looks like the two were fine. Seeing that, Kies sped up his pace and ran off, following the panicking crowd.
